I am a huge Ted fan and he was the inspiration to slam this wreck together (take that as a compliment, Nate).

Haha glad Ted inspired you Ryan! Unfortunately, he is retired from 4 wheeling. Except from NH though. ;) He started that, so he has to keep going!

Still not sure if this reinforcement plate was installed solely for Arctic Top usage or if for general overall strength improvement

I think the plates were a general improvement. Notice that the plates are not part of the Arctic Top kit. MWO ORD G740-W6 instructs that all M-38s should get the reinforcements installed. There is no Willys part number for the plates so it's unlikely that the factory ever installed the plates on M-38s.

Valuable insight as always. Thanks Bob. The M38 carried a considerable amount of luggage back there as compared to previous models with tailgates (2A/3A). It must have been more than that tub could handle under strenuous conditions.

A little more progress.

Jerry can holder and spare tire bracket installed. Bubba tail lights carried over from "old" M38 and installed here. I am keeping my modified brake light switch too.

Horn is now functional, hood blocks, windshield strap, and both headlight brackets are in place. I am awaiting the windshield seal but I couldn't resist setting the frame in place just to see what it looks like.

And I realized today the real reason I bought a welder was not to fix the tub and similar mundane tasks. It was so I could buy this:

And turn this:

Into this:

So I can have this:

You are planning to make up a few extra on those I hope... That is a great idea!

Hardly my original idea but the only ones I could find online were $45. I went to the military surplus store and bought the dummy grenade there for $12. I widened the hole in the bottom with a step bit, welded two nuts together then ground the flat edges of the nuts round, inserted into the grenade, and welded 'er up.

Nothing like driving across town to a mil surp store in the middle of a snowstorm and walking up to the counter and telling the cashier:

"I'd like one dummy grenade please".

"Pineapple or basball style?"

"Pineapple."

She grabs one from the rack of 100 or so behind the counter, hands it to me.

"Thanks"

"Is that all you came in for?"

"That's all. Why, is it abnormal to drive across town in a blizzard to buy one inert grenade?"

"Yes."

You know you are a weirdo when you are standing in a crazy gun store with the sounds of rented machine guns blasting away in the background and the pink haired pierced up employee is looking at you like you are the oddball.

Just curious....  Did you drive across town in a blizzard, in an open cab M38 with your steel WW2 helmet on, asking for a grenade?

No, but I certainly would have. The cold and snow doesn't scare me but the road salt does.....

New battery time! With such a momentous occasion I decided it was time to retire the bungee cord and twine from their duties as a makeshift hold-down bracket.

I made this instead:

When I bought the battery I didn't pay close enough attention to how close the positive terminal is to the edge. Once the cable is installed it's dangerously close to making contact with the bracket. As a precautionary measure I coated the entire bracket in "Plasti-Dip" (very cool stuff btw) and then cut a small insulator pad to go around the positive terminal. I'll probably end up cutting a piece of inner tube to use as an insulator pad so it blends in a little better but I didn't have anything else handy tonight.

Very nice...

Aren't you glad you kept the welder?

Many many years ago we were driving gently down a dirt road when the battery blew up...this was in the CJ-5......the bracket had loosened enough that it shorted against the positive pole, overheated the battery, and  KaBlamo!

I still use the metal brackets, but I make sure they are tight... ;)
