Omix-ADA Distributor question?
06/30/16 at 23:50:31
Print Post
I had just recently purchased and installed a solid state distributor from Omix-ADA. I know there are a few people that have them in their CJ 's and was wondering what your thoughts are on these distributors. I ask that because after installing mine and retiming everything I didn't even get 5 miles out of the distributor before the module failed on it. I contacted Omix-ADA and they sent a replacement module the next day, but is this something common that happens with this distributor? What causes these modules to fail?

I've been running this distributor for about 8 years and have had no issues at all.  I did burn up the module last summer due to a defective generator which fried all of the elec. components from the genny to the dist. mod. but that had nothing to do with the distributor.  Bought a new mod and was good to go.  My engine runs strong and efficient.  You may have had a defective module, but with a new (good) one, you should have many years of trouble free electrons!  In my experience, they are very reliable.

Thank you, good to hear. The new module they sent me is a little different from the one that was originally in there, so hopefully it is a better unit

Hmmmmm...I got mine a year ago and it was exactly the same as the one that came in the dist. 8 years ago.  Maybe they upgraded it in the past year?  If it doesn't work (or works great) please let us know.  Do you have a photo of the new one?

I didn't get a picture of the new one and threw the old one away. The new one I got had a flat bottom, the original one wasn't completely flat but had a raised area in the middle on the bottom. I asked the tech at Omix about the difference and he said that they have the modules manufactured in different places and that's why you might see different styles.

Mudviper,

I also have one in my 53 wagon (F134) - no problems and in 4 years and never needs timing adjusted.

I still have my original dist. as a fallback if needed.

Hope you don't have any more issues but sometimes replacement parts are defective.

Well looks like I just blew another module. Don't understand what is going on here and what is causing these modules to stop working.

Hmmm...knowing little about these things, all I can say is mine was fried by my 67 year old  defective generator which also fried my voltage regulator and possible my coil.  I replaced it with an alternator with an internal regulator  and all is now right with the world.  Is there a way to verify that your generator and voltage regulator are working properly?

That is something to look into. It has been rewired for 12v and the alternator looks like it has an external regulator on it. Everything else seems to be working fine

Got my new module in and the Willys is back up and running again. Lets see how long it takes for me to blow this new one..lol. I did make a change to the ignition coil I was using. The secondary winding on the coil, even though it is a new coil, only had around 6150 ohms. Put in another one that is around 8000 ohms. Lets see if that makes a difference

Well blew yet another module, beyond frustrated right now. Can't make it 100 yards down the road without these modules keep blowing. Anyone have a clue what to look for to stop the madness?

What is everyone running for an alternator with there Omix distributor? Been trying to solve this problem with blowing modules and the tech guy at Omix is not telling me that I need to run an alternator that puts out 12.5 to 13v charge. Do they even make one that puts out that low of a charge?

I use the standard Delco - I believe it is the 12SI 3-wire.  But the 10SI 1 or 3 wire seems to be the most popular.  I just cranked it up and it seems to put out about 14.4V +-.  That will fall once I get charged up I would think to about 13.6 or so.  As I recall the amp output of this alternator was 65 but I believe they may also come in 78 and 90.  Doesn't the internal regulator in the alternator or the resistor in the coil limit the current going to the distributor?  I'm thinking you have a bad coil maybe???

The coil I use has an internal resistor and the coil is brand new. I also have tried 2 other brand new coils and the results are the same

I built a Ford 429 engine and used a 1972 Ford  ignition module. In the wiring paperwork I got with  Dr. K's wiring kit, it said I must instal a external resister so I would lower the voltage going into the module.  Otherwise it could burn up the module. ??????? Maybe you are over powering their module too?  John
