Gas tank isolator
« on: November 30, 2012, 07:45:22 PM »
I just noticed my gas tank vibrates in harmony with the low idle on the jeep.  When I installed it I know it's metal to metal.  What are you guys putting between the tank and body of your jeeps?

I used strips of an old worn out tire.  I cut down between the tread and used 4 strips I think.  I did it to leave space for moisture to run out from under the tank and air to circulate.

Most parts suppliers have wear strip kits to go under the tanks. You don't want them too thick or the filler neck will not line ip well.  G503, KW etc.

I have some industrial conveyor belting that I cut strips from to put under the tank and strips of inner tube under the top bands.

It's great how hobbies can overlap.
We used 2" wide strips of Hypalon left over from a "hull reinforcement kit" from my Folbot kayaks.
You put strips along the outside of the hull where the inner aluminum frame parts meet the hull. Then when you scrape over a rock, the strip takes the damage and is a sacrificial, replaceable part.

I also used up most of a kit repairing my badly damaged, NEW Citibot skin. Hadn't put the sacrificial strips on yet and came close to trashing the hull. Gory details in case anyone is interested. Don't try this at home. ;)

I used some closed cell insulation made for water pipes I got at Lowes Hdw. It has a peel & stick backing so I just cut a piece to the width of my tank then cut it into two pieces length wise - peeled the backing & stuck it on the bottom of my tank !

Check with the parts suppliers, they sell kits. Here's a link to BobW's website with all the info:
