Picked my new jeep up today
« on: March 07, 2013, 04:22:46 PM »
Drove out to iowa this morning and picked up my 49 willys looks real good only place I see any filler is on the cowl but a trip to the media blaster to have the whole tub done will show me the hopefully few surprises I will have to fix. Came with the soft top and a hard top I dont know if its a real willys hard top or something someone fabbed up. Now I am going to restore it and paint it up as a WWII military jeep the MBs are way over my budget so this one will do nicely. I will be looking for a set of stock wheels for it I figure by the time I sell off the soft top, hard top and wheels and tires it should help.

WIth the varying rivet spacing and those small windows, I would tend to think a well built homemade one. Does it have any doors ?

This is the only door its a full size window hinged at the top the rivits are not pop rivits either they are solid.

I still am thinking homemade...No side doors?  I don't see any of the hardware that Sears or the other hardtop suppliers would normally use, and those window sizes are not the usual at all. It is interesting there is such a large back window used when the side window are so small.

Some of those old timers use solid rivets and bucking tools to set them...I have a jeep tub around here that looks like something out of Mad Max due to that method of repairs..Pop rivets didn't really come into general use from what I understand until the 60's, maybe a little earlier. But the quality level acheived by many of the home builders of tops can surprise you. Back then some of the plans in Mechanix Illustrated, etc were just incredible...really complex things. I remember a motorized jeep plan I saw recently that had been published in the 40's...It was a very complicated project requiring a small machine and welding shop, along with woodwork and sheet metal fabbing. When guys didn't have the computer games and TV to keep them busy they accomplished some amazing stuff.

There certainly was a lot of work that went into building this.

I just noticed those windshield grab bars..Do they show any signs of ever having been chromed?  I'm wondering if you have some DJ mixed in with 3A.. then again the vent seems to be bolted shut like a M 38.

Are you talking about the footman loops at the back of the flat of the fender?

And, yeah, that's definitely an M38 windshield.

I will get more pics today Im going to start taking the front clip off so it can be taken in to the media blaster Im sure there is a lot of things (wrong) or incorrect on this jeep the color Im going to paint it will be somewhat incorrect too. It will be a WWII era semi gloss olive drab I was building a 39 packard into a staff car and I bought the two gallons of paint for it but a local car guy came along and offered me good money for it so it went down the road with him.

Yes, the wide footman loops were used for the straps that went from the fenders to the windshield on the SURREY.  I could use a set of those wide loops. But I want to know if there are more Surrey featues on that jeep. Like a Cj5 style gage, weird parking brake, No tailgate, no toolbox,56337 serial no prefix,  etc.

Well spent some of today disassembling my jeep I believe it has been retubbed probably aftermarket thats why the lack of rust on the underside and no eaten through hat channel the whole underside and firewall has been undercoated at one time. It seems the jeep had a bit of a body lift when the larger tires were added its progressive about 1 1/2 inches under the core support to stock thickness on the rear body mount. I hadnt noticed before but the hood has no willys logo stamped into it and the windshield has military style channels up the sides and along the top over the windshield for the soft top to slide into. Im pretty happy with it it runs and drives good and for the 2800 dollars I paid for it I couldnt have even bought the tub for that I took lots of pics but dont know how to load more than one at a time.
