Probably spent nearaly eight hours today correcting things that needed fixed.  Engine was too low in front, too far to the passenger side, and trans and transfer were too far to the drivers side.  Also the drag link was bent all wrong and didn't get full lock to lock on the steering. Drag link has been rebuilt.

Now all that is corrected and the axles have been cleaned and coated to Eastwood rust incapsulator for painting in OD tomorrow.  Not to mention pulled a muscle real bad in my calf by trying to use it as a jack instead of a real jack.  Keep forgetting that I am not 20 anymore.

Painted the axles and linkages OD.  Fixed a brake fluid leak on one of the S lines.

Shocks painted and installed.  Just inexpensive Monroe shocks from Advance Auto.  Get a Veterans Discount.




Front axle and linkages painted.

Didn't pull the transmission or transfer, just pulled off the covers to see condition.  Transfer case inside look like new.  Just resealed the rear cover and bottom cover and filled with GL1.  The lower cover had OD on and could be from an M38.  There was no tag on the transfer but there was a stamped number on the transmission.

Finished brushing the transmission gears and flushing the cases.  Then filled with GL1 and installed the shifter with a new gasket.

Good idea. I almost filled up with�fluid before putting the shift tower back on my recent project. I went the conventional route and used the fill plug instead which is always a messy hassle. The way you went at least gives you ones easy fill.

The DJ3A had brackets bolted to the rear frame rails and a front bumper was used for a rear.  That was removed and an upper bracket was installed as here the DJ had none as there was a rear mounted gas tank instead.

Last night removed the oil pan as it had a lot of weepage around the gasket.  Upon removing and cleaning it was dimpled bad around the bolt holes so I tapped them back flat with a hammer and installed new gasket.  Inside the motor looked real good and that was a relief. 




Also the oil canister was changed for a later, what I have been told, CJ style oil filter setup.  I am going to leave that but use a Purolator filter rather than Fram.  Bad things from Fram in my Motorcycle days.

Tried fixing the radiator myself, no go.  So took it in for repair, just the basics, $77.  On the chassis now with new hoses and most hooked up for a fill tomorrow and a basic running to see if all is okay.

It looks great..nothing like a fresh radiator :D� �Good luck on the test run...that anti-freeze can be slippery stuff....my machinist recommended straight water for the first run and leak check....

I've never seen an oil filter like that on a jeep! Was that stock on a DJ?

Now I noticed your previous post....my 55 CJ5 still has the canister type...

Now I noticed your previous post....my 55 CJ5 still has the canister type...

What I found out is that the setup is from a Studebaker and was a common use for the Jeep and also drag racers.  Took a little to find out about it and what filters were good.  Don't like Fram and it had a NAPA 1050 and cross referenced to a Purolator.  It is a special filter because of it's positon.

Filters that are installed like that have a valve or flap that keep them from draining when the engine is shut down....as least you have a real oil filter! Is it full flow or plumbed like the original?

It's plumbed like the original and is called a bypass filter for the upside down application.

Got 98 percent of everything working on the chassis today and took it for a spin. It was fun trying to throttle it without a gas pedal and just trying to push the linkage with my foot. The rest wasn't too bad. Need to adjust the carb as it has bad spot about 1/3 throttle and wants to stall. Adjusting the brakes yesterday was fun.
