Working on the brakes was fun.  Now I need a few more parts to finish.  Adjusting nuts, the felt seal, proper master cylinder as the GPW/2A one is not right and will not fit the holes and support bracket at all.  The hardest part is not going overboard on making the parts look good as I just want this as a runner and not a ground up resto.  (So....hard....must....make....myself....stop).



I thought these tags were only on the Military axles.

Took off the transmission shift cover to have a look see.  As I noted before it moved under it own power in the drive way forward and reverse. 

There is slight surface rust.  In the picture it looks far worse than what it really is.  I will clean this rust off and fill it back up with the proper gear lube.  The transfer was also drained and the lube came out clean with no moisture at all.  So if feel confident on that as well.

Here is the difference between the 2A and 3A master cylinders.  I did fit the 2A double brake line mount instead of the single 3A one as I have brake lines from a 2A fitted because of the 2A axles.

This would make a good picture for our FAQ section. I know when you order a Crown master cylinder  from some places they ask you what the hole spacing is.. Does anyone know off hand when the change was made? Even when I was ordering one for my GPW  the guy at the store asked me if I knew the bolt hole spacing.

Without going into the books I believe the change occurred on the late CJ-2As at the same time as the frame was improved.

My 3A (early '49) had the Rzeppa tags on it.  Also had the gear ratio tags.  I'm quite happy that they were still there!

Little more done today.  Got the knuckles completely done with new lube, seals and gaskets.  Riveted new linings on the brakes and installed them.  Next step is to install the brake drums and lockouts.

Where did you find the linings and rivets, and how did you fasten the rivets? Just by hand?

Did the Rzeppa joints go back in?

I got the linings and rivets from Debella and the Rzeppa joints were in perfect shape and reinstalled.� All the bushings inside as well as bearings were in great shape.� They were cleaned packed and reinstalled as well.

And yes, the rivets were installed by hand.

Nice work Zooke.  It's always seems to be an internal fight as to how far to go with a repair/restore.  I'm with you there.

 I'm working on the axles and brakes right now too.  It's fun to see others working on the same stage.

One wheel down and three to go.  Got the drum on with freshly packed bearings and serviced lockout.  Plus a better picture of the linings installed with new rivets.

Worked on the drivers side front axle tonight.  So another one down.  Took a little more time on this one and now will have a do-over on the passenger side front axle.  Never did one before and want to make sure the other side is as good as this one.

Cleaned and repacked the wheel bearings as they were in great shape.  The races on the wheel were great as well.

Installed the wheel with new nuts as the old ones were butchered with a drift to get them off and back on. 




Next I added the lower portion of the lockout attaced the axle and nut and put a new cotter pin in.  Of course the lockout were completely taken apart, cleaned, inspected and lubricated.




Top half of lockout added, torqued down and tabs bent over.  The tie-rod in the picture is being replaced with a proper length one that does not need to be bent to get proper toe setup.

Ordered a Made in USA drum puller last Friday and was surprised to see it in the mailbox when I got home.  So...after feeding the dogs and puppies I hightailed it out to the garage to see how well it worked.  Just like magic.  So now to get the rear R&R the rear plates and put the new brake shoes and cylinders on.






The old axle seals were the felt type and were well worn causing axle grease to contaminate the brake shoes and generally gum up the rear brakes alltogether.

Got a little more work done this weekend.  Left rear brake backing plate, bolts, brake shoes, wheel cylinder, seals and gaskets installed.  Also got the brake drum on as well but did not take a picture of that.
