CJ3A Brake arm

Print Post
I bought a replacement brake pedal arm for my 1951 CJ3A, but it doesn't match my existing one.  The new one is heavier and the angle is different.  When I installed it, I found that the top of the brake arm does not line up with the hole in the floor board.  There is a casting number on the original arm, #647635.  Does anyone know what model Jeep that number should fit, and where I can find the correct arm?

A lot of the time, those arms a heat and bend to fit unfortunately.  Compare it to your old one.  You might be able to put it up in bench vise and bend it with a long pole slipped over it as levarage.

Here's the description from Walcks website. Same part fits many models over a 25 year period. As Bretto says, it may need some adjustment. Do you have a picture of old and new side by side?

Quote:
Description

This is the pedal arm that rides on the pedal shaft and is under the floor board. This fits 1941-66 MB, GPW, CJ2A, CJ3A, CJ3B, CJ5, CJ6 and DJ3A with the single reservoir master cylinder. The shaft is ready to be installed with a new pin for the push rod for the master cylinder and drilled properly for mounting the pedal pad to it.

Note: In some cases the pedal arm does not line up with the hole in the floor and you might have to heat up the pedal and bend it.

I bought one of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/170998093718?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m143...

It looks identical to the original from my 51. Both my old pedal arm and the new arm have the same casting number, 647635.

I have not yet installed it though...

The two arms side by side are definitely different bends.  I just wrote to the eBay seller that 1955CJ-5 suggested to see if he can verify the casting number on the arm.  If it matches, that is the way I would go.  Thanks for all the input.

When you look at the ebay ad and do the click to enlarge you can read the casting number. The one I received had the correct number on it...and it fits tight to the cross tube. I read somewhere that some of the repros don't fit any better than your old worn out arm...

If I get the cosmoline cleaned off I'll get a pic for you.

I cleaned off the cosmoline..nasty stuff, but mineral spirits take it off. You need to submerge it and soak it for a while or you will scrub forever..

more pics. The bare steel part is the one I got on ebay..

Thanks, 1955CJ-5!  That is the exact arm that I need.  I have already ordered from the eBay site.

I've just been test fitting my new brake arm, and the play has been reduced from about 1" at the pedal end of the arm to less than 1/4" with the new arm...this is with a new cross tube also.

The new arm is also tapped for the pinch bolt and the old bolt threads right in..
