Fhead in 3a now removed and L head installed.

My 3A came with an F head in it, I've removed it and installed a GPW L head and have some issues. On first install I discoverd the starter plate was different so I put the one off the F head on it Looked great all holes matched up, except no timing hole I put indicator on front, no sweat, wrong, starter does not engage the flywheel, damn it... So a few questions please?

1. Are the Starters different maybe bigger gear on l head starter, or how do they differ if so?

2. I know now the starter plates are different, how about the bell housing do they differ?

3. And the most likely culprit the Flywheels are they different? I know I have the L head flywheel in there now?

I tried to post photos not sure how much they would help but seems I can't simply paste photos in the body of my post anymore is that right?

Sounds like you have the wrong ring gear. There are 3 different tooth counts available. There are a bunch of different bellhousings and some are not interchangeable. To be safe you should be using the same ring gear (flywheel), starter and bellhousing that were working previously.

Have you seen the starter post in the FAQ section and the flywheel diagrams in our tech section that you can access from the front page?

Click on the picture of Nate's jeep and it will take you to the website's front page. From there you can access several pertinent pages about your issues.

We still need some bellhousing pictures. I have several different bells here, just waiting to get some paint on them so they photograph better, then we will have some reference pics of the different bellhousings used over the years.

Here's a link to "starters & ring gears" on the home page.
http://www.cj3apage.com/index/Tech_Tips/StartersAndRinggears.htm
If your motor is still in the Jeep, the easiest way to tell which gear you have is to measure the distance from the inner diameter to the top of the tooth as in the picture.
Here's a link to FAQ page "straters" Lots of good info.

Also keep in mind that you can flip your ring over on the flywheel if you have a bad section of teeth. (usually two bad sections about 180' apart)
Bill beat me to the point while I was lollygagging with this post. Smiley

Found some good info here so I thought I would share if anyone is interested. So as it turns out with what I have now I need the 129 tooth flywheel/ring gear, what I have now is the 97 tooth. Starter info was good reading also so thanks for the links.
