Hello from Chicago
« on: September 18, 2016, 01:12:22 PM »
Long-time Jeep owner, recently picked up this beauty in Ohio. PO claims it is a CJ-2a, I believe it to be a CJ-3a. He only had it for 6 months anyway as he was just flipping it as a dealer so I stand by my assumption :)

Somewhere along the way, they switched out the original 134 for what the dealer claims is a 137. The helmet is actually an air "scoop" for the carburetor coming through the hood. I have a few plans for it in the future: tuned-up engine; overhauled tranny/transfer case; beefed up axles; new spare tire; some tools; and new seats. Otherwise, staying 'as-is'. I'll be back out in Ohio this coming week, will snap a few more pics of the engine and other mechanical components.

I've read what others have paid for models in worse condition, so I won't tell you all what I paid -- I feel it was quite the steal ;)

Pics to come in my next message. That is my 2015 WK2 behind the Willys... quite the mechanical difference!

Hi Casey, Welcome.

There are a number of indicators that suggest you have an M38. At least the grill, tub, windshield and tailgate.

Edit...and possibly the frame...and the driver side fender.

Interesting thought... question about this, focused on the headlights and spare tire placements. I would think the headlights would protrude from the grill a bit farther with an M38, and the spare would be on the rear / tailgate.

Everything about it, including serial number, are in Ohio. Let me pull some of it Tuesday when I'm out there. You've certainly posed a view that I want to learn more about.

I wish I knew more about its history, and who kept it in such good condition or restored it. So many questions!

Casey,
This Willys has had quite a few modifications.  We would have to see more detailed photos before we know for sure what you have.

The sheet metal might all be reproduction.  Early on, (1970s), MD Juan didn't produce civilian body components.  It's not uncommon to find mismatched sheet metal.

The grill has a mix of things going on, but the sure tell sign of an M38 grill are the horizontal holes down low on the front face.  These were for the pivot pins that aloud the grill to hinge outward if engine service was needed.  This feature is unique to an M38.

Large fuel filler opening...M38
Reinforced tailgate...M38
Bolted shut windshield vent...M38. Along with the park brake handle placement and the removable gauge cluster.

Again, with the limited views offered,  I can't tell for sure whether this is a 2A, 3A or M38...but the sheet metal is M38...or reproduction M38.
