Brake & Clutch Pedal Cross Shaft

Hi.

I am looking to replace this part. The only tutorials I can find show this cross shaft being replaced with the Jeep body completely removed.

Can this part be removed & replaced without taking the body off?

I ask this because I'm not sure if there is enough space where the pedals come through the firewall. Is there enough room to move the pedals sideways to get them off the old cross shaft and put them on the new cross shaft?

You can remove the pedals from their respective pedal arms, and then the arms can be disconnected and removed from the cross shaft. On my 3a it looks like the tailpipe will have to be loosened and moved so the cross shaft can be pushed towards the transmission and then removed. There is also a brace that supports the end of the cross shaft, it is fastened using the bolts that hold the master cylinder in place.

Take a picture before you take it apart so you can get the various spacers and pins back in the right order as these will center the pedal arms on the opening in the toe board and allow the pedals to be installed without rubbing the sheet metal.

What ever you watched to illustrate removing these parts was probably much easier to film with the tub off.  Not easy showing how - with everything in place.  It will come apart though.  Most diagrams are in Section J of the SM.   As posted, remove the upper pads/shanks first.  The clutch arm is the only one clamped to the shaft.  Yes! Yes! Yes!  Take a picture (or several) before you start!

I wouldn't be surprised that your shaft will look pretty good after you get it out.  The bracket (and the tube) might have some wear on it and allow the clutch arm to rock side to side.  The brake pedal arm itself (since it slips over the shaft) will also be worn.  I think this happens when the jeep isn't lubed enough.  I had a machine shop install a bushing on the brake arm to tighten it up (it's getting close to needing replacement).

Forgive me if this is only a dream that I had, but...  Somewhere or another I thought I saw a kit that put a long bolt through the center of the tube, then a brass "cap" went on the inner end of the tube that applied inside support to the brake arm.  A washer and lock not then was fitted to the inside.  I would assume this bolt / nut were not fully tightened.  I found the following:  Not exactly what I was remembering, but similar idea.
