Preparing to replace Universal Joints (U-joints, ujoints)
« on: October 04, 2021, 04:10:11 PM »
Hi there,

Pardon the title, I wanted to make it easy for searching.
I read through some previous posts (https://cj3apage.com/Forum/index.php?topic=2337.msg19671#msg19671) in preparation for u-joint replacement on the V-35's propeller/drive shafts. From what I can gather, I'm looking for a Spicer 1310 universal joint for all four? Napa has two options, greasable, and non-greasable (UJS UJ369 vs. NPJ P369 respectively. Also attached). My V-35 will probably not see much water crossing (if any), and to be perfectly honest, may only see very light off-road/fire road stuff. Will the non-greasables be sufficient? I'm not really up on my u-joints knowledge, is there a stronger joint type I could opt for?

Finally, what's a 5-785x? I've seen the number come up, is that just the old part number?

Thanks in advance!

1310 is the u-joint for the driveshafts. I like to have grease fittings on my driveshaft u-joints. The non grease fitting u-joints could be stronger because they are solid and don't have the passage ways for the grease.

It could be a newer non-serviceable version.  There could be other applications for that u-joint where it needs to be un-serviceable.  I'm like Bob, I prefer grease fittings.  Being able to positively push grease into bearings also keeps other contaminants out, e.g. tie rod ends, pedals, rear axle, etc.

Besides, there's supposed to be a lot of grease fittings on a jeep.  No reason to short change a perfectly good project by eliminating some of those grease zerks.

If you buy Spicer Life Series joints they are non greaseable but have better seals and long life lubricant.  It is what the auto manufacturers use on vehicles with really long drivetrain warranties.  I always use Life series on all my vehicles and never have early failures.  My wheeling rig also uses them.  I would rather get rid of maintenance items in an old Jeep because there are plenty more that cannot be eliminated.

Already went with the greasable 1310's (They arrived Friday :) ). I like tracking the maintenance intervals and feelin' like I'm keepin' the jeep running, even though it's more the other way 'round ;)

Planning on changing out the four driveshaft u- joints tomorrow. Looks like there's a strap holding them to each pinion yoke and the front t-case output and all look pretty straight forward.  However,  I noticed the rear t-case output bolts appear to pass into the e-brake drum. Anything special to consider there?

What are there torque settings on the bolts?

Any other tips that might be useful for a newb that's never done this before?

Thanks!

Have you got a Service Manual (SM)?  There's some good stuff there on removing/replacing.

Look closely at the ones you have in the drive shafts now.  Are the zerqs angled (forward/rearward)?  Are your new ones angled?  Make sure the zerq angles the same direction.  I've learned it's possible to reverse that angle way too easily and then not get a grease gun on it - so you have to uninstall/flip/reinstall.  The u-bolts (straps) will release the shafts from the jeep (except the rear of the transfer case; remove the companion yoke along with the drive shaft).  You'll need to press the other side out following the SM.  I put the transfer case in neutral so I can spin the axles - to get my wrench on the nuts.  At least one wheel off the ground for the rear (and front if no locking hubs) again so you can spin the shaft to get a wrench on the nuts.  The bolts holding the flange yoke to the companion flange (on the brake drum) can slide back into the brake cavity area.  I stick my finger in one of the brake drum holes to put pressure on the bolt head to keep it from spinning (against the flange inside the brake drum).  Image below from CJ2A thread on "Detailed Pic Of Inside Hand Brake Drum", pg 2:

https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/detailed-pic-of-inside-hand-brake-drum_topic13605_page2.html

You may find that once the nuts are all loose, you might be able to spin them with your fingers.  I put the nuts back on the u-bolts/brake drum bolts so they don't walk off never to be seen again.

Since two cups will now be loose (all except the companion yoke on back of the transfer case), they may fall off and the needle bearings may fall out too.  Not much of a problem since your goal is to replace.  However, a good practice is once the u-joint is free from the yolks, wrap tape around the u-joint so that those loose caps can't come off.  Makes for a neater disassembly where you don't have to clean up all the tiny needle bearings.  Doing this on the new u-joint will really be important as you don't want to lose those new bearings!  Yes, it's possible to carefully hold it and rest it on the floor while getting into position, but the tape technique will help avoid additional work.  I do it this way but have in the past had to pick up needle bearings, wash them off, insert them back in the cup and push the cup back onto the u-joint ( with a few choice words along the way).

Study how the caps are held on to the shaft ends.  Most likely it's a snap ring.  Be careful removing.  There's a plier made for this but you can also use a screw driver or needle nose pliers - carefully.  They can easily go flying.

Run some sandpaper inside the rings that hold the cups - concentrate on the outer part above the snap ring as the most buildup will be there.  There could be rust and crud that will make inserting the new cups difficult.  Nothing wrong with a squirt of WD-40 or other penetrant during this cleanup, just wipe off the excess so you don't have contaminate trying to drip its way into your new u-joint.  There should be no paint or crud where the caps will go - they're snug and anything on those surfaces could cause binding.

I'm sure there's more than one way to install a u-joint but now the easiest way to explain it, other than the SM, may be to google and watch a couple of videos.  I DO wrap tape around the opposing cups while I'm pressing the other two into place.

Torque values are in section L, 15-18 lb.-ft.  In the back, section U-55, TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS, the u-bolts are 15-20 lb-ft and the flange bolts are 20-30 lb-ft.

Another thing. If your replacing all 4. Pick out the best looking one being replaced and as said before wrap some electrical tape around the cups to keep them in place. Now put it in 2-3 baggies and put it in your tool box. It is very very rare to damage more then one U joint at a time out playing. This way you have a no cost replacement part that will get you home with minimal hassle and cussing. Where once home you can replace with another New U Joint and again wrap up your emergency repair part.

Its also a good idea to put a chalk mark on the drive shaft and Yokes so that you get the driveshaft clocked/timed correctly when reinstalling it.

Boy, that's a great tip! Thank you! I'll be sure to save a good one.

I didn't actually make it to the U-joints today, (suspension takes priority right now) but did prep for the work with a paint pen :). I watched a vid that the shafts should go back on in same alignment as when they came off, so drew a line starting in the shaft, across the yokes, and onto the diffs/tcase. Also put F/R for front/rear too.

FYI, press the caps with a vice or a press if you have one. Do not tap or use a hammer it can dislodge the needle bearings and you will have to start again. It's not a hard job just a bit fussy.

Silly question... how do I fit a torque wrench in here?

You don’t. Just tighten them about as tight as you can get them with a normal 1/2” box wrench. If you’re not Lou Ferigno they’ll be fine.

Apparently, google says there are torque wrenches that will fit in tight places like this, but for this that seems like overkill.

I haven't ever "torqued" these.  I tighten them with feel.  First, I turn them as far as I can by finger.  Then I squash the lock nuts with some bite and they are on.  I do evenly draw the u bolts down so that approximately the same amount of threads are present on both sides.  And on the flange yoke, I crisscross tighten to keep it even.

IF this is a bit new to you or you're not sure, for some fun, you could set up a same size bolt in a vise and use a torque wrench to see what it feels like.  Torque wrenches are rather long so to get the same "feel" you may want to choke up on the torque wrench so your hand is at the same distance for the box/open end wrench you'll be using.

Great advice,  thank you. I was thinking a whole wrench for just this might be overkill. I might still consider a good adapter,  but we'll see.

I appreciate everyone's recommendations!
