Jerry Can Mount

At a junk store today looking at Jerry cans.  The guy had four crappy cans that were not usable, but one of the cans had a mount on the bottom. I bought it and little did I know that it appears to be an old military jeep Jerry can holder.  At the moment (picture) I am removing the paint. My question is where do folks usually attach this mount? If to the tailgate, do you use a backing plate? Thanks.

Because I am on very tight trails I put the can mount and the spare tire in the rear bed of the Jeep. Trees can't rip them off there.

Good find!!
A lot of people mount then on the sides, and such, but here's what I did, I didn't use the tailgate anyways, and don't have to worry about knocking them off with trees.
It's about the same layout as a M38.
FYI,� My finger is only there to hide my plate number, and yes the spare is flat. That happened 30 min before I took the picture, lol!




The M38 tailgate has extra support built in, so yes, it does need backing.
I just used scrap angle iron to build this.

I was once told that Willys(or maybe aftermarket?) put out a reinforcement kit for the tailgate, so you could mount the can and tire back there...hard wood supports I was told..

Any one heard of this or seen it?

My CJ-5 had a can mount on the right side between the passenger cutout and the front fender....terrible place for a gas can!

What are you using for a spare tire bracket? Is it just the 3A style one or do you have the M38 one with the bottom support as well? I was thinking of adding a 3A one to my M38 tailgate but wasn't sure if it would hold up. I'm thinking there must have been a reason the extra support was added to the M38 ones.

Jerry can mount that bolts to the draw bar is by far the best solution... Removable so you can still use the tailgate.

Or build your own swing away spare tire carrier.

This a photo of my Jeep ready for the trails. Fuel on drivers side, spare tire on passenger side, long spade on floor with stake to drive in ground to pull with, container on bottom full of pulling straps, container on top contains maps and other necessaries, tool bag and lug wrench, jack mounted behind spare tire.

If you look close there is a warning decal on the dash to my passenger. It says, Hang On, I Want To Try Something.

I duplicated the inner reinforcement of an M38 using T shaped iron for the gas can mount. (Cut up an old garage door opener rail)

I used oak to support the tire carrier.

I second the swing out carrier, its one of my favorite parts on the jeep
