Spicer for Bendex

The deconstructin continues and the list of items that need replacing continues to grow. The latest is the original Bendex axels. I have ordered replacement Spicer axels an and am wondering what things I need to watch out for when making the swap. Also, the axels I removed were coated with grease, should I coat the new axels prior to insertion.

I would coat in grease and there is nothing to watch out for. The Spicers should just slide right back in. What was wrong with the old bendix joints?

I think you will need to check if the bushing spindle is required.

There is bushing for bendix joint itself. You might need to remove those.

I never do this myself but I do believe that it's not a straight forward replacement. If it was me, I would give a call to Carl Walck and discuss about it.

There is also a screw on each side of the axle to adjust the maximum rotation angle of the steering.

We have three different kind of joint with three different rotation angle...

I have Bendix joints. But, the spindles have the shouldered bushing. There is a thread about this somewhere...if you have the shouldered bushings and they are in good shape then you are good to go...I'll look for that thread....

Thanks for the replies; I am flying by the seat of my pants on this particular project. It is going to take me a bit of looking and thinking to figure out where the bushing is supposed to go (I ordered bushings with the axles).

I didn't notice the screws on the side of the axle for adjusting the rotation. Does anyone know the correct angle for the Spicer axle?

I have to replace the old axles because the balls have dug huge groves into the race. Everything else in the steering knuckle was trashed, so it's no surprise that the axles would be shot as well.

If you have the Service Manual reprint the steering angles are in section O-14a..

I'm not sure how to check them though, without taking the whole jeep to an alignment shop...

Wow, lots of details and I already used a punch to remove the kingpin bearing races 

An interesting note is that although I have the Bendex axle, I also have the bushing that works for the Spicer...at least I think so.

Not all Bendix shafts are the same, later ones use the shouldered bushings.
