Water Pump..When it Rains, it Pours.
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:01:41 AM »
How do you know when you're loosing your water pump?

I'm not sure it's the pump yet, but I was hearing a new sound after replacing the rad cap.  It was an very intermittent...tink....tink tink...........tink, like a single ball bearing bouncing off or getting occasionally caught in something.

Then the noise started to sound like an unlubed bearing falling apart.  Squeeling.  The sound is coming from the front of the engine.  I think.

Use a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint the location of the noise, or pull the belt and rotate the generator and water pump while listening for bad noises. There is a weep hole on the bottom of the pump casting that will leak antifreeze when the seals in the pump go.

I talked to a car guy this morning.  He asked me if it was leaking from the weep hole.  (it is)  He said, that is a good sign that it is likely finished.  The pulley is also kind of sloppy.

I don't know if it's a coinsidence.  New pressurized rad cap, then all the sudden the old water pump gives out.  What do you guys think?

The life expectancy of the Water Pump is inversely proportional to the need to drive it today... I'm guessing that the problem you had with overheating is more related to the pump than the cap.  I think maybe the jeep gods were smiling and they allowed you find this problem with both components before you get stranded with Carl and Calvin in a remote location with no chance of a tow.

My water pump started leaking real bad so I decided to overhaul it myself and machine the seal surface on the casting. When I got the rebuild kit and tore my pump down and saw how it works I am amazed that they will even seal good when new. It's a flat rubber disc the is held by the impeller and spins against the cast iron housing. The surface has to be in very smooth and flat for it to seal.

My suggestion is to buy a new water pump if you don't have a machine shop at your disposal.

As Gun mentions, I feel blessed that the failure has been discovered in the comfort of my garage...and not in the back woods of Colorado.

I went ahead and ordered a new pump.  I have some Willys plans this weekend. Hopefully, it gets here soon enough.

I believe I will try to rebuild my old pump.  I'll put it in the winter pile, right next the the Carter carb, the old gas tank, the old wheel cylinders... etc...

Thanks for the feedback.

That water pump is the same as on a 1952-55 CJ5 with an F134, you can usually get them at NAPA, my store has them in stock... Just sayin.

Gunslinger, do you know if the 52-55 CJ5 pump uses the newer ceramic seals? If so I will buy one of them.

Not sure on that, they are generally new manufacture, I guess I don't know on the seals.  I put one on Triple X and it seems fine, I've got a bout 700 miles on it and no problems so far, not that I would expect problems at this point.

I did try NAPA. They list a few re-manufactured and new units. My local NAPA online said they were in stock at the warehouse. Unfortunately, the online inventory was wrong. They would have had to bring one in from the vendor.

Autozone lists the CWP1000...Limited Lifetime warr. None in Denver. Oreillys lists the CP52...None in Denver. Advanced Auto...none in Denver.

I bought one from a guy on Ebay...USA made, and a good price. Delivery on or before Friday July 6th.

I know what you're thinking...'Ebay?'

I have purchased from this vendor before. He has an incredible selection of NOS and Repro Willys stuff. Check him out.

It's such nice stuff, I think he might be one of the regular vendors, we all would normally call on, hiding out on Ebay.

I'm going to wrap this post and tie it with a bow.

I pulled the old pump.  I have a GPW engine.  I was happy to discover the pump is a GPW 8505, original.  It was partially seized, leaking, and on borrowed time.  I will rebuild it.

Got the new pump.  Heavey cast pulley. Very nice.  Had a hell of a time getting the bypass plug out.  (for my heater connection)

Installed it.  All strange noises...Gone!  Leaks...Gone!  Willys is running cooler!  (Not sure it's pump related... or cooler weather related)

Another good learning experience.

We were going to take her up to the Golden Super Cruise, but it rained cats and dogs last night.  Oh well.  We really needed the rain.

I have purchased from him several times.  I feel he has the same source as most of the other Willys Jeep distributors, i.e., Omix Ada and Crown.  Like always, when buying that stuff or any other, Buyer Beware.  Most of us have kind of gotten used to using Carl Walck as a baseline for Jeep products. He knows his stuff and he is great to talk too. However, I purchased a clutch disk from him, after talking to him on the phone about wanting to pay more for quality if available.  Had I not been in a pinch I would have returned the clutch disk to him and purchased a US-made one from Novak right here in Utah.
