Stomp start or key turn starters?

I've got two CJ3As, both with stomp starters. �I recently got to play with an M38 that had a key turn starter, no stomp button, it turns over like a modern car/jeep. �Is this a modification that's possible on the old stomp starter style engines/transmissions? �

There's a bushing in the bell housing that holds the main rod of the stomp style, will this be an issue? �Will an M38 style starter plug and play and have room to slide in the bell housing? �I'd prefer original equipment but the reason I ask is that I'm a right leg below the knee amputee and you don't really appreciate a god given ankle until you ascend/descend stairs, try to dance, go bowling, hit a fastball, or finesse a Willys stomp starter and the gas pedal at the same time. �A newer style starter would be a nice to have, but if not I can manage.

Here's a pic I saw on the 3A page some time ago.  This is one way a person was able to have an igntion key turn-to-start.


There's also a CJ-3A here in town that has a dash-mounted steel rod that goes through the dash at an angle to go through the firewall and attach to the lever arm of the starter.  I thought it looked a little strange but it works perfectly.

M38s originally were all kick start and 24 volts so it sounds like that one was modified. On a CJ-3A with a 124 tooth ring gear you can go with the solenoid adapter that Calvin posted or a Henry J starter from a car. Keep in mind there were a bunch of different starter combinations used in these Jeeps and the starter, ring gear and bellhousing must all match each other.

I saw a jeep on a recent trip, where the owner had kept the push starter system but instead of using a foot to push it he had run a longer rod out through the lower part of the dash and put a que ball on it, so it became a palm starter.  The ball was located just under the dash straight out from where the foot starter was.  I think all he did was put a longer rod on the kick starter.  It actually looked pretty good.  Just a thought.

I had a 48 in high school with electric start.  My dad rebuilt the motor and we did put a foot starter on it.  Discovered I believe it was the shaft length was wrong so the starter gear wouldn't connect to the flywheel.  Worked fine, just didn't turn anything.
