Help/ Nut on shaft comming out of transfer case

(53 CJ3A) � I've been working on changing the seals on each end of the rear driveshaft and at the same time clean up and replace the shoes on the parking brake. The problem I am having is when I am re-assembling everything. When I tighten the nut on the shaft coming out of the transfer case that holds the yoke something is binding when i move the jeep in reverse (only going backwards pushing it in and out of my shop). I know I put all the shims bak in place and its not the shoes inside the brake drum(as far as I can tell) so im at a loss. If I loosen the nut to a certain point the shaft turns in both directions with no problems. The nut is on far enough that �I know it wont come off, but I know it should be tighter. I have taken it down three times and put it back together three times and am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated. As frustrated as I was I did get to hunt yesterday afternoon and was lucky enough to shoot a nice doe. I am on my way to skin and quarter it in just a little while. It got down right cold in South Louisiana last night (at least by a southerners standard) so im waiting for the sun to come up to warm things bit.

I have been thinking about that since you posted and the only thing I can think of is the emergency/parking brake.

Have you backed off the adjuster on the brake and tried it? I can't imagine anything inside the transfer case that would be free forward and lockup going backwards.

Have you tried putting the low/high lever in neutral and rolling it forward and back? You do have it out of four wheel drive I hope.

When reassembling the parking brake, the strong retracting pad springs hook under a catch. � If you do not hook them behind the catch or lip thingy, then the springs that retract the parking brake pads will rub on the rotating mass. �Double check that the springs are under the retaining hooks. � The hooks also connect from behind the pads. �I missed that a couple times before I figured it out. �Also, when the spring is not behind the hook, the pad edges have a tendency to wander outward toward the drum face. � They might then only catch when the drum is rotating in reverse. �Possibly allow the drum to ratch over the obstruction in forward and catching in reverse. That could be the problem. �
