Fluids
« on: February 11, 2014, 08:24:40 AM »
I am going to PM my new to me 2A and want to change all the fluids in the transmission, transfer case and front/rear differentials.

I found this at NAPA - Gear Oil, GL-1 90 Gear Oil; 80w90

I've done a ton of reading and ended up more confused then when I started :o

Am I safe to use this in all of them?

Here at the 3A, I believe you will find that the GL1 is the recommended choice for the tranny and transfer cases. Believe it or not, 30w non detergent oil is also a good choice.

According to the manual, the right choice for the differentials is a 90w hypoid oil. This would be any of the current GL5 extreme pressure hypoid gear oils available at all auto parts stores.

Not trying to get into a "lubrication" debate. But I've got a 5 gallon bucket of the Napa GL1.
So I have a clear understanding--- The GL1 goes into the Transmission & Transfer Cases but I'll need a straight 90W GL5 Hypoid Gear Oil for the Differentials correct?

Thanks again.

You've got it. The way I understand it and I'm no lubrication engineer, is we need the GL1 to avoid the damage a modern gear lube could do to the brass parts of our transmissions, but in the differentials the hypoid gears need a hypoid lube that will hold up under the extreme pressure between the ring and pinion. No brass in the Diff, so GL-5 is fine.

Sounds like you have a lifetime supply of GL 1.  :)
