First Time On The Road

All I can say is Wow. What a great experience. Today I got my title and tags so naturally I drove my 3a from work (where I have been fixing it up) to my house, about a 25 mile trip. I took the state highway with a speed limit of 55. I felt very comfertable doing 40 - 45 MPH. I dont think I need to go any faster then this, as I was enjoying life to the fullest. Naturally, a few people get * off and flip the bird, but most people just smiled and waved. I have antique tags so there is no inspection needed, and my insurance costs $40 every 6 months. Not a bad deal at all. I also have to mention that the jeep does great aound town. The max speed in town is 35, very easy for the 3a to pull off. If you dont have a old jeep you should really consider getting one. They are extremely simple and a pleasure to drive!

congratulations!  glad you got her on the road.  could you imagine what would happen if you tried to take one of those on the Interstate?  ha!

All I can say is Wow. What a great experience. Today I took my Willys on a back-roads drive.  I love this time of year!! Grass and fields are green again,  flowering and budding trees . . . so beautiful.

20+ years since my first time on the road,  and it is still an exhilarating experience !! 

No "birds" on my ride,   just a couple other "single finger" shots at me  - >  thumbs up.   :)

Austin,  it will never get old,  you will always enjoy cruising in these beasts.  :)

I want  to take a ride down skyline drive this afternoon.  Hopefully the rain holds out for me. Just my luck. As soon as I get this raod worthy, we have a week of cold rainy weather.

Iv been driving it around all weekend. I put over 100 miles on it. Only broke down twice (two simple fixes)  first it just died after I filled the gas tank. Took a few minutes to figure out  but i determined that it was becuause the gas tank was not vented. Other other time my clutch went to the floor. That was because the linkage came out, so I replaced it with a nut and lock washer. The only other problem I have is my rear axle leaks oil like a sive. Not a big problem while in driving, but when I stop I have to smell that gear oil cooking on my exhaust. Im going to try to find a kit and rebuild next weekend.

Where on the differential are you losing the oil?  Front? Back? Bottom?  All?

It looks like the oil is leaking on the front where the drive shaft connects.

That is a fairly common leak point.  If the seal surface on the yoke is grooved, you may need to add a speedi-sleeve to the yoke and replace the seal.

Tim hit the nail on the head on the yoke being grooved.  My yoke was grooved also and i lived with it for about a year putting off the repair.  When I got around to putting the speedi sleeve in, I wish I had did it sooner.  It is a super easy fix that doesn't take very long at all and you no longer have gear oil being slung all over the bottom of the jeep.

I�m with you Mark.� I put this off mainly because I had a hard time spending that kind of money on a little steel disc.� But it does solve the leak problem.� I've now installed a sleeve at all four positions on two different Willys.� �I should try to figure out how to invest in this company. :D

That doesnt look bad at all.  Do I have to use any sealer or gasket makerial on that sleve?

It is recommended to use a sealer between the sleeve and the yoke.  I used Permatex 2.

You will also want to use Permatex 2 to seal the splines between the output shaft and the yoke.  This is also a leak point.

Tim, while im thinking about it, I have another question. My 3a jumps out of second when I take my foot off the gas. Still drivable, just a pain when I want to use 2nd gear to go down a hill. Is there a simple fix that doesnt involve a trans overhaul?

Austin,
Popping out of 2nd gear is a pretty common affliction on the T-90 transmission.� The internet is awash with this issue.�

I just got done fighting this same fight.� It generally means you have some worn out parts in the transmission.� It could be one part, or a combination of a few different parts.

I fought through this issue in my current build thread.� If you want to know what I ended up doing, here is a link to the start of my troubles.� It goes for a couple pages, but I did end up fixing the transmission.

It starts here about half way down on page 14 and trickles through to about page 17...

Thanks for that info Tim. I keep hearing about Brass Bushings. One of my customers told me he has some new bushings machined from a higher quality brass. Its nice to see how everything looks before you go in. I will probably rebuild the trans when it starts getting cold out.
