Big Bend Texas Road Trip

I thought that I would start this topic early. We are headed out to Fredericksburg, TX and then Big Bend National Park in April, and yes I am taking the Jeep. We will start off doing Old Willow Loop to view the Texas Bluebonnets. Then its off to Ft Davis TX and then Big Bend to do some old trails. I have always wanted to take a ride in the back country but never had the vehicle to do it in. A lot of the area you must have 4WD or you are in trouble. This is mostly desert so not a lot of trees like the fall color tour. I will be posting pictures as I am able (if I can get internet access). If I am not then you will have to wait till the end of April to see the highlights.

Well the vacation is over and now I am trying to get all the photos together.

The first stop on our list was the town of Fredericksburg. This german community is just west of Austin Texas and home af Admeral Nimitz as well as a wonderful museum of the Pacific War. During the month of April and May it is also one of the best viewing areas for the Texas Bluebonnets.

Stayed in Fredericksburg a couple of days then off to Fort Davis and then Big Bend. The trails in Big Bend were very good and due to the rain the night before there was virtually no dust. This rugged area is not all that difficult for an old flat fender but there were areas that you could get into trouble. We drove the roads along the Rio Grande on the south end of the park about 4 hours and saw 1 truck and 2 motorcycles. There were some areas that I really wanted to drive but being just the wife and I, thought it would be better to not drift too far off just in case something went wrong.�

It would be graet to have a group of flat fenders do this run and remote camp. As you can see from the pictures the desert offers beautiful color and great scenery.

That does look like a great trip, Tumble.  I'm kind of surprised that it is relatively secluded.  I think you said there weren't many other people down there.  I'd like that!  Your jeep really looks great!!!  Did you have any mechanical issues to deal with?  In the pic where you mention we're looking at Mexico...is that the Rio Grande down there in the distance?  Or is that a road?  Thanks for letting us travel along with you!
