My engine S/N is J190_89
I think that makes it a CJ2A engine, Family tells me the Engine was replaced. I dont see any issues setting it up as a proper CJ3A engine. As it sits, theres no oil filter, no pcv valve. already sourcing parts.

It was probably manufactured in February 1949, about a month after mine.� See if there is a tag on the carburetor, should be 636 for a CJ3A.� It depends on wether or not they just replaced the block or the whole engine.� Does the starter have a manual foot plunger?� Not much difference between a CJ2A engine and an early CJ3A.� A photo of the engine would be great.  I went back and looked and you are missing the air filter too.  Probably an Oaks flat top type.  I would not be surprised if the missing parts are laying around in a pile in some old garage.  Time for a treasure hunt LOL!

No tag on the carb. I already removed the air cleaner, but the original crossover tube is gone. There�s no breather port on the oil filler tube and no connection to the intake from the tap pit cover. More stuff to buy. And it�s a foot start starter.
Here�s a curiosity, I was removing the exhaust where it connects to the header and one of the bolts is hollow! Did they run a temp probe on any of these?

Interesting, you have a Donaldson air cleaner, not an Oaks.  I think they used Donaldsons on some 2A�s and later 3A�s.  Beginning to think they used whatever they could get their hands on LOL!  Aside from the oil filter you should be in pretty good shape.

If the temperature gauge in the head is intact, be very careful and see if you can break it free from the outer nut before you remove it, otherwise you will twist the tube off and you will need to replace or repair it.

GregL you would enjoy the book - The Civilian Jeep Model CJ-3A, by Bob Westerman. A very informative book of the development of the 3A. I bought mine from Walck�s. It has a prominent spot by the throne. Lol

It looks like your head is off of a military Jeep.� No ribs between the head stud bosses.� Check this out http://ww2jeeps.com/htm/heads.htm

BTW if you edit your photos and turn them 90 degrees they do not come out distorted.  It seems they need to be in landscape rather then portrate to come out right.

Most girlfriends give their boyfriends dogs and the parents are stuck with the dang dog when the girlfriend goes her own way. Yours gave you a JEEP! She is a keeper and so is the Jeep. Looking forward to seeing your progress and If you ever need a good home for it (the Jeep) I have space in my garage. What a great story.

Can you retrieve the casting number on the head?  It might take some cleaning.  Passenger side...front...top.

The Carter carburetor looks to be WWII vintage.  Can you shoot a close up of the linkage and patent numbers?
