Our Ky jeep, Pap.
« on: October 16, 2018, 01:35:44 PM »
I have just inherited a project, CJ3A, from my gf. Been in her family for a long time, were calling it Pap for her Grandad.
I'm new to old jeeps but I know its a CJ3A.
Now for the bad news.
There are no data tags on the fire wall and I have been told it doesn't have the original motor! I want to get it going and safe enough to drive and title for her Dad, and do an in depth restoration later.
Is there anyway to nail down its age closer than 49 to 53?

Ill put pictures up soon and be looking for lots of advice as I proceed.

Great! Start here http://www.cj3a.info/cj3a/date3a.htm
Was it ever registered? The vehicle number should be on the registration.

When I got my Jeep many years ago, it had lived as a plow Jeep, so had to go through the DMV in NY to get it registered, so it can be a pain. So see if you can find an old license plate, registration or registration sticker for it. If you can you have it made. Take that information to the DMV and they should be able to find the original registration number. Cars did not have a VIN back then, but there will be a vehicle serial number. That number will tell you when it was built. Once you have that number you can see about registering it and buy a id plate and have it stamped with the correct number. Kind of backwards but it should get you legal. You will need some proof of ownership, a bill of sale should do it. Gf is girl friend right?  I was thinking grand father LOL!

Sweet!  Now just to make sure, all CJ3As had two plates.  A patent plate withe serial number CJ3A xxxxx and a body number.  They will have different numbers, and the patent plate is the one with the serial number that you need.  The top plate in the photo below is the patent plate.

Oh and yes gf = Girl Friend, that is the plan though, it has an old license plate, so next is to try and research that to a s/n. First is get the engine out (seized ) an$ set the mechanicals straight.

The body plate number will be different, because they did not match them up. You can see that my serial number and body number differ by 34. The good news is that you have a old plate. You should be able to go to the DMV and get a copy of the original registration. If you are really lucky the original registration may be laying around in a box somewhere. That registration will have the serial number on it. You then can get a reproduction patent plate and have the number stamped into it. You will probably need some proof of ownership. If her grandmother is still alive, she should be able to sign it over, if not the estate executor should be able to. It kind of depends on who it was registered to
If you pull the radiator (two nuts on studs on the bottom of the radiator) you can get on the crankshaft nut with a 1 3/8 socket. Penetrating oil and marvel misery oil down the plug holes might help free it up. You can see what mine looked like in my 49 CJ3A thread below, I was able to free that mess up.  Good luck.

I have to correct my friend Stony. Not all 3As have the body tag. In fact, most 3As never had them. The body tag was eliminated quite early in 1949 and never returned. Your 3A is early, as is Stony's. They both would have the body tags.

Thanks Hawk, always fun to learn something. I knew they changed the serial numbering but did not know about the body plates. Pap is only a couple of thousand from mine and I was a little concerned that he had the body tag and not the patent tag. That turned out to be the case, but the DMV should be able to come up with the correct serial number.
BTW Pap is very handsome! ;)

Nice CJ-3A. I'd love to see more photos. Can you post a photo of the passenger front fender splash apron taken from behind the tire?

Thanks
