Nice job! I'd say that is a pretty darn good representation of a WWII jeep, only a few small details give it away as a civilian model but 99 percent of the people out there would never know. Great to go for a ride too. Thanks for posting.

No, just always keep my hand on the shifter for some reason.  I even did when I drove the M151s  in the army.

A big thumbs up and a standing ovation are deserved...I miss the events with veterans I used to go to with my GPW..I always got more out of it than the vets, I think. The kids might contract Willys disease, I hope you had their parents sign a waiver....

Well my transmission and transfer cases are leaking around all the gaskets I did not replace.  Also it grinds a little in 3rd.  Sometimes not but most times a little.  It did more till I replaced the shift tower with tight forks.

So I took apart transmission #2 to make sure it was good for resealing and a lot of pitting in the needle bearing areas.  All else looks in good shape.

I took apart transmission #1 that was in the plow jeep as it worked great and I never had a problem with it.

Wrong.  It was rebuilt at one time and I guess either being in a plow jeep killed it or it was rebuilt incorrectly.

broken teeth, burnt and blue gears, broken and bent slinger, missing needle bearings and retainers.  What a mess.   Worn needle bearing surfaces and galled bushing surfaces on the housing.

And the wrong gear lube as it ate away at the brass sync gears.

Yard sale military haul today. Saw a yard sale and decided to a take looksee. Came away with a WWII winter coat, M1 Garand ammo belt, 2 WWII wool blankets. Korean War- 2 field pants. Vietnam War - 20rd M16 mag., helmet nap strap, fatigue belt, dust goggles and web belt. All this stuff fits. All for $30.

Since my type of jeep was the mainstay of jeeps during Korea, I can also do that era as well now.

Been working on the transmission and transfer case.  Transmission is done.  And now working on the transfer case.  Boy are these things busy.  I think it was leaking from every possible gasket and seal.  I hope now it will not leak and of course stay cleaner.  Maybe a couple of pics tomorrow.

Worked on the transfer case these last couple of days.  There are just too many places it can leak from on these thing.  Man they are busy with seals and gaskets. 

The gears inside were in very good condition from my Transfer case #1 (first jeep, plow jeep).  Bearings were good as well.  So it was taken apart, surfaces were cleaned and new seals and gaskets were replaced.

All the debris, brass and metal the migrated over from the transmission was flushed out and Bearings were cleaned and lubed.

When trying to mate the transmission to the transfer it kept binding the lower gear set and reverse idler gear.� Way too much drag and nearly impossible to turn.�

The transfer case was a 41xxx number.� I initially thought it was the length of the bolts.� Tried a shorter bolts.� Same thing, binding.� � Took a look at the transmission cases on both ones I took a part and looked a� both transfer cases.� The 41xxx transfer cut outs for the lower shaft rod and reverse idler rod are totally different.� The 41xxx has only a small cutout for the shim holding the shafts as the later 52xxx has a larger cutout that accepts the shims in the rebuild kits.



Notice the small cutout for the shim.� Once I modified the shim and bolted things back together all worked fine and it shifted through all gears with no binding.



And on #59xxx you can see the larger cutout of a bigger shim and no chance of warping the cases when bolted together.





This had me puzzled for a bit till I went back and forth and looked closely at both transfer cases.

Need to bolt the shift tower on, cotter pin the output gear and bolt down the back cover.  Then ready for install.

I wanted the rear axle on Short Round to look the part.  Nothing is worse to me than a replica and the rear axle is a CJ.  So I happened to be looking at other projects one day and lo and behold...none other than jpet had made exactly what I needed.  Faux Floater ends for your CJ axle. 

I had msgd him about what I needed and set about doing so.  I traded a set of "F" marked GPW rear seat hooks for a set of repro ones and a set of bad front brake hubs with the brake part pressed off.  I had these brake hubs sent to jpet of him work his magic on. 

He turned down the brake backing plate as I didn't need it that thick and didn't want my wheels spaced out that far anyway.  He then made a set of axle ends out of aluminum for me to bolt on.

The finished project.  I opted to have the bolts used in aiding the removal of the rear floater axle added as I had seen this done on a couple of jeeps.  I guess they kept them there so as not to loose them.  People came up to me and told me a had a couple of bolt  loose on my jeep.  Had to explain.  It was fun.
