Got some time on my hands for a few days and this part of the Jeep required no hard manual labor. Can't afford the good stencils so put some together, traced them onto the hood and hand painted them. Still need to do the other side and make some invasion stars.

Looked like your stencils did the job just as well as the high dollar kits.. Nice work!

Thanks!  A long as you stay inside the lines.  Glad I practiced with those crayons as a kid. ;) ;D

Very nicely done Zooke!  Very nice.  You have far more patience and painting skills than I do.

I'm left handed.  When painting something like that, I have to start from the right and work left.  Otherwise, I drag my hand through the fresh paint. :(

Got the stars painted on. Used masking stencils for spray paint on these...but brush painted them to match the hand painted numbers like would be done in the ETO.

Bumper numbers represent the history of the 321st Glider Artillery.  I was stationed with the 101st Airborne and Bravo Battery 321st Field Artillery from 1976 to 1978.  B-13 was my vehicle number.

So, I have a question.

On WWI US aircraft with a star in the roundel and WWII US military aircraft with stars and bars the stars on the wings are always oriented with one point of the star directly forward, in the direction of flight.

On jeeps it seems the stars are always oriented with one point headed directly aft....

Anyone know why?

Probably more for asymmetric reasons than anything else.  It looks odd on plane facing aft.

Originally the stars faced one way and then later on the Army changed the direction. I'd have to pull out the marking manuals to determine when the change took place.

So that doesn't answer the question why??????   ;D

Not only does the star point in the direction of flight, they point in the direction of the fight.  I like to believe the change occurred to signify the direction forward.  The direction into the fight. 

This is my thought only.  I have no idea why the change was made...

I like the "Direction of Fight" explanation....but in spite of that most are painted pointing aft...

Here is an explanation of markings, but I did not see the orientation mentioned...
