Engine compartment / Re: Disappearing water
« on: July 28, 2023, 05:46:55 PM »
You do know that the water level in the rad is just about 1/2in. above the cores. If you fill it to the top, it will just boil out the overflow tube till it gets to the proper level.

FWIW, I suggest not to put anything on the floor except truck box liner!! I bought a brand new CJ6 in 1968 and a new set of indoor outdoor floormats that I installed right away. Guess what happened!! Within 6 months the floor was starting to rust, and that was the end of floor rugs in any of my jeeps!! :-\ : :( :(

Actually, if your really after "newbie", you could use the term "flat fender newbie"!! That will cover all jeeps from the war models to the CJ3B. The 3B was built from 1953 to about 1968. It doesn't really cover the CJ5 modal. ;)
It also incudes wagons, trucks and the jeepster!!

Welcome to the site Tchara. Not to be facetious at all, but there is a Willys Jeepster that was built from 1948 to 1950, so it's hard to be a Jeepster newbie! More like a "Willys Jeep" newbie!! Hope you enjoy the new toy!! ;)

Being a carpenter for over 40 years tells me that all you have to do is use a hardwood of some kind!! It doesn't matter what you use! Just make sure that the blocks are high enough to keep any projections from outside windshield above the hood!! I care more about the protection of the hood paint that I do for any perfectionalist attitude!! I have a couple vehicles that I take to car shows and no one has ever commented on the size of the wooden hood blocks, or a lot of other subjects brought up on these sites. It's your vehicle, do as you please!! MHO!

I bought mine for a 53 from Willys Overland back in 2007, and they have a perfect frame and drill all holes to match their frame. Mine fit just fine. :)

Gearboxes and axles / Re: front axle shaft and steering knuckle lube
« on: January 05, 2021, 05:35:03 PM »
The reason that I use 140 gear oil is---If you fill the knuckle with grease, the joint will spin a hollow globe in the grease and not do it's job anymore. The other reason is that neither the top or bottom tapered axle bearing get any grease into the tapered bearing. And because they only rotate a small part of a circle they do not get grease all around. With 140 oil, when the hubs are in or the transfer case is shifted to 4-wheel even without the hubs in, the knuckle will splash the oil up into the upper axle bearing and the axle joint and lubricate everything.

Buy, Sell, Trade / Re: Tranfer case seal puller

The tool I use to remove seals is a small wrecking bar or a big screwdriver because the seals are no good anyway, and the tools are cheap!

Tom
I just do the same as I do with the tranny and transfer case--fill with gear oil till it starts running out of the fill hole.

If you click on the 3B jeep on the top right corner, it takes you back to the original information pages.
I took my own advice and clicked over there. Wow, sure is a bunch of new info!

As far as I know, when they changed the steering wheel to the big horn button, they used  the same steering wheel to about  1971 when Kaiser was taken over by AMC. I think if you look at any supplier you will probably find the CJ5 wheel and order it with the horn button and ring.
