Great pics.  That tree was indeed scary, but actually the top seemed to come through the ordeal in not bad shape.  I'd say nine Jeeps is a pretty good turnout, too.  Looks like you guys had a blast.  Thanks for posting the pics!!

I don't know what that particular Mercedes diesel is, but I can tell you a non-turbo VW won't give you any more oomph than the L-134...maybe even less.  Good dependable motor, just powerless.

I agree with the others on grounding.  I used to fool around with 6v Farmall Cubs and they were very fussy about having a good ground.

Tough luck.  You'd just reached the point where you could drive around a bit and now this setback.  This is the main reason I don't own an old Jeep, or any other old vehicle for that matter.  You see, I can always drive you-know-who's.   ;)  The first time I drive the 3A this year I'll have the satisfaction of knowing it has a new water pump among other things--and the M has had an all new frame-----and I didn't have to do any work.

Good luck with you trans rebuild, and of course if you get back on the road I'm, er, only four miles away.....

My vote is for engine #1, only because I've driven it and it is a very good runner.  Put an overdrive on it and it'll probably go 70.  I didn't know the head wasn't correct.  I'd save #2 and come up with some sort of test stand and do a compression check for starters.  If it's weak, well, you've done everything else with these Jeeps, now here's a chance to learn about engine rebuilds, which you could do at your leisure.

Can you spell "three bay garage"?     ;)

With proper maintenance (mainly good clean connections) your 6v system should serve you well.  I'd say stick with it.

I can't wait to drive it again....and see what else I can find wrong with it...not.

That's a significant improvement. Funny how a simple adjustment can make such a difference, although in your case you've done a lot more than that.

I'll try to refrain from any posts for a while so you can get your sleep and save your money. :-)

BTW, how do the vintage 6v headlights work in the dark?

I drove about forty miles and had my foot in the bucket most of the time, although I usually didn't exceed fifty. I was told not to downshift the overdrive unless I was stopped, so often I had to wait quite a while before down shifting as I was actually downshiftng two gears. It would slow to thirty, but never ran hot...faithfully showed 190 degrees even at the crest of a hill. Seems to me if the timing were off it might begin to overheat especially when lugging...but I'm hardly a mechanic.

In another, totally unrelated point, I did learn about the "Jeep Wave." ;)

Ryan M (my son) graciously trailered his Jeep down here yesterday and we spent the day bombing around. What a blast. It's unbelievable how well that thing drives. However, I'm thinking it doesn't have as much power as it should. My first car was a '68 VW beetle with 52 hp and a 4 speed, and it sure didn't slow down in the hills like this 3A does (which, by virtue of its overdrive, also has a four speed). It is pretty comfortable at 50 mph, but when you start up a grade, it slows down fast...downshifting is often needed. It uses very little if any oil, and doesn't smoke; Ryan says it has pretty good compression, although I don't know the numbers. It does run very well. I don't believe the Jeep weighs much more than the VW did.

The problem is, this is the only 3A I've driven out on the highway; I have none others to compare it to. Are my expectations too high?

They tend to make a lot of noise if they're going bad, and yours are quiet.  I'd button 'em up and run 'em.

We used to have problems plowing snow with CJ5's.  If you hit an immovable object (like a curb) and the plow didn't trip over it, the fan would go right through the radiator.  It happened to two CJ5's that I knew about.

I did indeed hear that clicking after the second snowbank thrashing, and wondered.....  :-)

I agree with Tim in that a 24v probably wouldn't work in a 12v system.  In addition, I've heard that starter work and it spins the engine over well.  It's most likely a replacement.

Could be worse, I suppose. At least it fits flush on the front. It is disappointing, however, when you look at your early pre-refurb photos and see how much better it fit. If someone says something, you can tell them you had to lift the hood to make room for the turbo kit. ;)
