I've made a decision. Because of the decline in my wife's mental health, Dementia/Alzheimer's, I will be closing OJC as of December 31, 2026. I will need to spend full-time caring for her. I will not be accepting any new jobs as of today, 4/23/2026. I will fulfill my outstanding obligations to my customers. After that, I'll build out my good cores and sell them on the various websites I frequent and/or on eBay. Everything Jeep will be for sale. OJC.com doesn't get much traffic, so I'll probably let that go as well. And I apologize to my good friends who have stood by me for all these years.

Best is with zero fuel in it from the tank to the carb. Second best is full of fuel. What humidity levels will it encounter?

Do you know how many mistakes I made years ago? I still make mistakes. Fortunately, like you, I learned to ask questions and read Jeep books. There's no such thing as a dumb question!

Storage protocol depends on the conditions the vehicle will be in while in storage.

Oil smells of gas—no gas in the glass filter. Unless you've dumped a pint of gas down the carb's throat in short order, I would suspect a bad fuel diaphragm. It sat for six months? I know you wrote that you run the carb to dry. You run it until the tank is empty? If so, that's a good way to let trash in the tank collect in the plastic filter, and get to the pump and mess with the valves.  When was the last time you changed out the plastic filter?
As an aside, the worm-gear clamps are not good for rubber to straight-cut steel. After six months, dried out, those connections may be leaking air into the system. I recommend fuel injection clamps.
And yes, if you've verified gas in the oil, change the oil and filter immediately. Consider rebuilding the pump, also.

This is for those of you who have sent carbs and those considering sending carbs or pumps to me. I've been sick for the last two months.
Now I know. I apparently have had this now treated ulcer for a very long time. It stayed very small until recently. Aggravated by COVID and a bacterial infection and the treatments for them it suddenly grew larger. The ulcer allowed for significant blood loss, two pints. Two fewer pints to absorb and carry oxygen from a heart enduring congestive failure. It is functioning at 75-80%. This blood/oxygen loss led to one of the 400 different variations of Anemia. Fatigue, aches, pains, shortness of breath, dizziness on standing, fluid buildup (Edema) in my feet and legs, got to the point where I could not function normally and now here I am. It's not an easy or quick road back, but I'm on that road now. Iron and B12 supplements with better nutrition. I can't give a time frame for full recovery. There's a lot of damage to repair.

May I clarify something? Octane is not a component of gasoline but is the numerical measure of the amount of compression a given volume fuel can withstand prior to ignition. Higher octane ratings indicate fuel that is less likely to pre-ignite when under pressure, which can cause engine damage.
Timing and mixture are key contributors to engine performance. Pinging under load indicates either/both incorrect timing and/or a mixture that is too lean.
Also, timing that is too far advanced and/or a too lean mixture will contribute to overheating.

Due to issues beyond my control I have been absent from my work for the last four weeks. In light of these issues I must announce that unless you and I have already agreed for me to work on your carburetor or pump, or you have a warranty claim, I must decline any new work for the foreseeable future. I will continue to be available for consultation and advice.

67 Octane fuel is no longer available. I recommend the 90 Non-Ethanol. The best way I know to properly tune the motor is to use a vacuum gauge and a dwell/tachometer. https://oldjeepcarbs.com/thread/1321/f4-134-vacuum-testing

What is the Octane rating of the fuel you are using? How old is it?

5º BTDC is for 67 Octane. The higher the Octane Rating the sooner the spark has to happen because higher octane takes longer to burn completely. There is more to it than that and I would be happy to speak with you on the phone.

What is the condition of the distributor? Dirty inside? No shaft wobble? Advance weights move freely? Advance weight springs in good shape?
