Brake drum replacement (Read 1618 times)

	So I am replacing two of my brake drums. Purchased two from Rock Auto that says OEM. HOWEVER, the new ones are 3 inches deep, while the two old originals are 2.5 inches deep. Correct me if I’m wrong, but these new ones from Rock Auto will not work?

	Try it on. Looks like the new drum has a ring that may fit over the backing plate. Try it on.

	Original early brake drums were designed with the hub mounted on the outside of the drum. Later versions were designed to accommodate the hub on the inside of the drum. Most would consider this an upgrade, as it's easier to remove the brake drum for service. I've not done this modification, but I believe you can use the new style drum. You will have to attach the hub to the axle. Not to the drum.

	So The original drum has press on holes for the wheel lugs so it could press on behind the hub. The new drum does not. I dry mounted the right front hub and the newer drum, being about 1/2 inch thicker, fits outside the hub nicely. In this setup, When you remove the wheel, the only thing keeping the drum on is pressure from the brake shoes. Has anyone else done it this way and/or does anyone see any pitfalls to this?

	No real pitfalls. Again, this is a nice upgrade from the original layout. You will need a different kind of stud. I believe you'll get what you need if you purchase studs for a CJ3B.

	Different stud because the originals had to press through the drum and hub and would not work here. Thank you I probably would not have thought of that until the wheels would not tighten. Thanks for your help!
