Who would have thunk it

we had a lady come in for an oil change, new car. first oil change, she left it and got a ride to lunch.   well, our oil change feller came up and said she had a bad oil leak on the car, one of the techs went over to look, it was covered from front to back and all under the hood with oil, it wasn't low and we didn't see anything obvious so I told him to wash it off real well and drive it a couple of miles and recheck for fresh leaks.  nothing showed up, I didn't want her to get back on the road and have any trouble so we kept looking, she came back from lunch and I told her about it.  she said " we do that in New York to stop the road salt from rusting up everything"    being from east Texas I never would have thought about that. we spent a lot of time and washed off the oil she paid someone to put on

There are companies up this way that charge big bucks for that service. They spray the undercarriage, rocker panels, etc to try and minimize the damage of the carnivorous road salt that's applied liberally to the roads during the colder months.

The old farmers used to just spray gear oil all over the underside of their vehicles and drive down a dusty road.

Yep no salt in Arkansas either.  Ive got a 97 4runner that I use for a hunting vehicle that still looks brand new underneath.

Road salt - not just for winter.
I read somewhere that parts of Michigan use leftover brine from some manufacturing process to spray down dirt and gravel roads in summer. The governmental agencies get it for free, it keeps the dust down and it ROTS everybody's cars in the summer.
Who'd a thunk it?

Colorado uses Magnesium Chloride.  Basically, it's liquid salt.  It's sprayed prior to a snow event.  It's horrible stuff.  I don't believe we have services that coat undersides with oil. There a clearly environmental trade offs.  The clean air folks believe the Mag Cloride reduces the chance of the "brown cloud", but it kills metal, and plant life.
