Google helped me find this. A patent for a 4 wheel drive system..it's a little different from what we know today......

A. Hebert was my grandfather...I guess I get my tinkering instinct from him..

I think it's amazing that things like this can be found on google...

Who knows if one was ever built. I read the description and the focus seems to be the ability to steer and have 4wd....early closed knuckles?

Pretty complex as Nate said, and a suspension might have presented problems.

He was a stone carver in the quarries of Vermont in the early 1900's. Lots of his work in the cemeteries of New England. I never met him, the stone dust affected his lungs and he died in 1945, long before I came along..

He had one other patent...a pneumatic coupling..

Very cool!

I also have a relative with automotive patent - >  a great uncle who "invented" a style of door handle . .  the type where 4 fingers go into a loop, and the thumb pushes a button.

My memory is a little fuzzy on the details,  but he did not get rich from it  Grin . . .  one of the "big 3" automakers bought the rights from him (GM I think),  and that first payment is all he ever received.    My parents have a newspaper article, including his photo,  showing him getting a check,  or some kind of recognition.
