	Actually I think that he might have touched it up with a rattle can. If you look at the crate it is sitting on it has black paint on it, so unless Willys painted em on the crate it has been touched up. Though I could be very wrong on my opinion that does happen on occasion just ask my wife.

	Factory installed motors were black. Legend has it that replacement motors with a R prefix were supplied RED, but it is also very possible they came in black.. Bob W, got anything to add to this about the color?

It's looking like 4LR prefix (short blocks) were red. I'm guessing this was just the primer/sealer. And R3J prefix (complete engine assy) were black. Most R3J engines show up in stationary equipment. I'd sure like to know the Willys part number of that NOS engine assy.

	If I bought it I certainly would use it when the time came. It would be nice to have a fresh drop in engine but that would take the fun of building one for myself. I have a complete used engine and a lot of spare engine parts so I have no need for that engine.

	There is a discussion on a similar NOS engine for a GPW over on the G 503 site.... it is on Ebay as well. The seller evidently planned on using it, so it was taken completely apart and reassembled with all new seals and gaskets and freeze plugs.....I would expect that might be needed on this one too, although replacing freeze plugs might be a bit excessive..I'd expect many of the gaskets to fail quickly if it were used as is. They have been sitting for 60 plus years drying out and rotting... I installed a rebuilt but never used motor in my 47, a couple years back. I took off the pan and replaced the pan gasket, and also had to loosen up the valve train which had stuck in storage. Sitting is never good for mechanical things, especially in wetter climates or outside.

	I was thinking the same thing. In addition to gaskets/seals, you'd probably have to inspect everything internally for corrosion. (Perhaps hone the cylinders if there's a patina of rust?) The fact that the water pump appears to be seized is a concern... But if I bought it, you can bet I'd use it! I don't need a museum piece! Besides, my engine has a 2A S/N (and was probably cast for an MB), so this is probably closer to original. The "JEEP" on the head is a problem for me, though. A 3A head should say "WILLYS" if it's original, shouldn't it? What year did they start using the "JEEP" name? -Paul

	Dry gaskets, corrosion, mouse nests and insects...all are probably there...and the carb will need to be gone through....the engine may even need a rebuild without the machine work. But still, a new starter, generator, manifolds with no cracks, and maybe no rusted bolts...and standard size pistons.. Maybe the future winner is a forum member and we will learn all about it... The head on my 3a has both the Willys and the Jeep cast into it. The Jeep is sort of centered front to rear and the Willys is back by the firing order/valve clearance casting..

	I'm going to have to go back and look at my two heads. I don't remember seeing Jeep on them. The pictures I have handy (only of the installed head, not the spare) don't show the whole head--I could see Willys on one shot, though. But based on the pictures here http://ww2jeeps.com/htm/heads.htm I think you're probably right. -Paul
