My first thought tends to be the clamp not locking down for one reason or another.
Another thought is your distributor is sticky and might not have fully returned from advance in your previous use?

This makes the most sense to me.... with helical gear teeth on the cam, oil pump drive, and timing gears I doubt a broken tooth would do much besides make noise. If it got to the point it would skip a tooth your jeep would have a terminal failure and not continue to run. My opinion anyhow.

I'd be taking a good look at that distributor, the advance mechanism in it, return springs, etc. (And make sure you have the gap set correctly, cam rubbing block lubed, clean and polished cam in the distributor, good points and condenser, rotor buttoned down tightly with the little retainer spring if you have one so equipped.
