Carter W-O Pump Strainer...

In the parts list/drawing the Carter rebuild kit shows a "pump check strainer" (part # 33)basically a small tubular screen filter that is in the accelerator pump circuit...

The carb did not have one installed, and the kit did not supply one...

So is this little filter screen necessary? I will have an in-line filter between the main fuel pump and carb...

Maybe it's there in case the accelerator pump plunger sheds a few particles?

Suggestions on where I might find one?

It should have been in here....

The kit I bought had a new screen included.  I'm not entirely sure of its function.  Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable not having it in my Carter.  The designer put it there for a reason.

I have my old one.  I could send it to you if you wish.

Never seen one in any of the kits I have or in my carbs. I don't think it is really necessary. I think it would cause more headaches than it is worth plugging up all the time.

So do I go with door #1, or door #2? Or trade it all for the box on the floor?

Thanks Tim...PM sent...

Sounds like you need another opinion (if nothing more than to break the tie! Wink)
I'd recommend contacting Then And Now

http://www.maritimedragracing.com/then_and_now_automotive.htm

They rebuilt my pump and carb.

I've opened 4 -Carter WOs.  3 working, and 1 parts carb.  All four have the screens.

It may have been originally designed to filter fuel, as the original Willys 3A from the factory had no fuel filter. Most of us have added external fuel filters at this point, so it may not be neccessary.

Again, I don't know.  IMHO, I just feel better keeping the original design intact when it comes to a Carter WO.  Who am I to re-write the rules?

Actually all CJ-3As had a fuel filter. It is the screen in the fuel pump. Many later replacement pumps do not have a screen, thereby omitting the fuel filter.

The replacement screen, courtesy of athawk11 has arrived and has been installed...the carb is now complete!
