Lots of info here....

http://ww2jeeps.com/htm/Lheadmain.htm

Is there a number stamped on the flat spot above the opening for the water pump? You may need to lightly sand it or use a wire brush, then a little oil rubbed on the area might bring the numbers out.

Just browsing the images it looks like it may be an M38/MC block. So what's an MC?

Water pump boss number J143005.

Is there a "3" in front of that "J"?...that would make it a 3A motor...

Look closely!!

Well there is a curve that could be the bottom of a 3 but it's in such bad shape it's very hard to tell. I thought 3a motors had the boss behind the oilfilter?

There was the MA... Prototype WWII jeep
Then there is the famous MB...WWII Jeep.
Then there was the MC... The Korean War Jeep.  It is commonly referred to as the M38.  Many consider it the finest flat fender ever made.

Welcome back to the site.

There are L-134's that have the boss behind the oil filter, but I don't recall right now the years and models. The only one I've seen was a very early 40's with the chain drive cam. With an engine number as high as yours its likely a 53, just like your jeep....it might be the original engine....

What is the casting number? Early engines had it on the passenger side of the block very low and later they cast it on the drivers side...there might even be a date cast in, according to Bob W's book...a copy is great for research, click the picture at the top of this page and it will take you to a page with an ordering link..

If there is no 3 in front of the J it would be a 2A engine number.

Looks like a great candidate for a chemical rust remover dip or electrolysis. Hopefully it isn't cracked. If you don't have all the main bearing caps it might not be worth doing anything with.

2A engine serial numbers start with CJ2A, then numbers after it.

I don't know for sure if the later serial numbers included the CJ....

I think we need a casting number from the lower passenger side of the block.

The first CJ-2A engine serial numbers began with a "CJ-2A" prefix but then sometime in about 1946 it was changed to just a "J".

Did it come with a front engine plate, the one with the motor mounts? If it has one mounting ear forward and the other to the rear then you could probably still use it in the 3a...

Don't feel bad Nate.  There have been a dozen times in the past where I think I have these Willys Jeeps figured out, only to be proven wrong.

This 46 2A....

Has this serial number....
