As I prepare for doing mechanical work (as the tub should be off by sometime on Saturday, I hope), let me pose a question about axles:

I have the stock axles still in the CJ3A--not sure offhand which ones they are.  I think D25 front and D41 rear  I also have a second set of axles out of a somewhat later Jeep (I think still in the Willys era, though), I think these are D27/D44.  I need to decide which ones will go into the rebuild.

Considerations:
1.  Originality--obviously favours using the original axles.
2.  Brakes--the newer axles have 11" brakes on them, while the stock axles are 9".  I presume, however, that I could move those across if I wanted better brakes.
3.  Damage--one of the new axles needs a repair.  It's been a while since I looked at them, but IIRC, the shaft that connects the differential to the driveshaft may need some bearing work.  The old ones are fine.
4.  Locker--the new rear axle has a locking differential in it (Powr Lok).  I don't believe this can be put into either of the original axles.  I really like the idea of having this in the Jeep...
5. Knuckles--at least one of the original knuckles may have damage where the tie rod connects due to the makeshift steering that was in there before I got it having a different diameter and/or taper on the tie rod ends than the knuckle was designed for.  The new axles have their own knuckles.

Pretty much everything except originality and the probable bearing replacement seems to favour using the new axles.  I am presuming this is all or nothing, as I don't expect the new ones to have the same ratios as the old ones.

What would you do?

The rear 44 is a good one. Esp if it has a posi.
bigger brakes are good too...
All depends on how much work you want to do. You are not going to break the stock axles.

Can you take pics of the two sets of axles? I think your jeep might have a D44 rear. IMO, the D25 is a better axle than the 27. Larger ring and pinion means more strength. The steering knuckles will swap around. Brakes will bolt right in too.

I looked back at your intro. Yes, a '49 would have a D25 and D41. Believe it or not, the D41 is arguably stronger than the 44. It has a larger ring and pinion gear. You are just limited by gear ratios and traction devices.

I have a dana 25 and 41 in my 49 3a with 11" brakes. The brakes are a real good upgrade and no one will know until they get out the measuring tape. Parts are easy to get for the brakes too.

I'll shoot a bunch of pictures of my rolling chassis when I get the tub off this weekend.  I'll be sure to include shots of the existing axles.  The other axles are out at my cabin, and as of last weekend were still under a foot and a half of snow.  And there's no way I'm carrying those things back to the driveway.  They're staying where they are until I can get a vehicle into them!  But things are melting pretty quick now, so I might try this weekend.  I'll post pictures of those when I get them back.  I should probably open up the one and attempt the repair, anyway.
