engine serial number

I read that the serial number was supposed to be on the engine behind the water pump on a flat spot.

But when I look there is a flat spot but no markings.  Nuthin Nada Zip

Am I looking in the right place?

Thats the spot! I can see some numbers there. Take some sandpaper and clean it up. You should be able to see them then.

If you get that area to bare metal and still see no markings, look to the left of it in your picture and around the corner on the engine block for an oval pad with numbers...You might have a non ribbed head from what I can see in the pic ( I may be wrong, hard to tell from what you can see) which may indicate an earlier engine than what would belong in a 3A.  Also just for your info, check the timing cover for a rivet centered over the cam gear, which would indicate you have the earlier timing chain engine, instead of a gear drive one.

Nate you must have either superhero eyes or a huge screen on that  I phone. I can't see any numbers on my laptop.

I can see a 3 in the second pic that was posted. And no, I'm not on my iPhone, I'm on the laptop.  Grin

Might be a factory replacement engine. I can't remember what the prefix is for that. 2As started with CJ2A and 3As start with 3J.

What are the odds of someone breaking out of a lurk and claiming "THATS MY ENGINE!"

I suppose it happens.

Thanks Nate.

           THAT'S MY ENGINE!!!!

RJ is a later factory replacement engine, RL4 was another prefix used I think mainly during 2A years.
