Question for 3A page members about classifieds...
04/17/13 at 16:09:44
Print Post
Hey guys....the admins are discussing a couple of possible changes to the classified section and would like some member input..

We are thinking of aging out and deleting old posts after a certain date....like after 30 days of no activity, or more, to get the old ads that are no longer relevant off the board.

One thought is get rid of the clutter, an opposing thought is that old ads can be used to research current values of parts and pieces one has to sell.
What do you guys think??

Also we are considering adding an off topic for sale board...for things like the 91 Suburban I need to sell or my opd escort truck, or that Coleman lantern you have sitting around.

Would you guys use an off topic for sale board at all?

Thanks for any input from your admin team, and thanks to the other admins for helping out and all the new and good ideas.

Hey Bill,
I like both of those ideas, not sure if we can do this, but what if we auto deleted all posts that did not sell and kept all posts that were properly updated with a sold notification, that way we could still do the research, but the data base would have hard value data rather than asking price.

As far as the non related for sale, I think an expiration date of 30 days is fine.

I want to get some jeep parts for my wife.... Any takers?

I believe that would elimate the  "Hey is this still for sale" on items on a year old post.  I see it often on the boards.  If it is not sold they can re-post it, with no hard feelings.  Both good ideas.

Some places allow you to delete your own ads after the item is sold other places they get a little POed if you dont delete ads yourself for the sold items.

I think I like the 'Off Topic For Sale' idea.  I would much rather sell an item to folks I know than go through the Craigs List nonsense.

On the older 'For Sale' posts...I like Gun's idea of leaving the 'SOLD' stuff out there for research purposes.

I don't know how complex the software is, but if a response to a 30 day old for sale post could be blocked from adding additional posts, or met with a "This offer has expired" pop up box, we may be able to stem the "Is this still for sale?' posts.

It looks like I can make it so the posts auto delete after a set amount of time OR I can give everyone the privilege to edit/manage their own posts like locking them so no one can reply to them.

I like the idea of deleting the posts after thirty days. It's easy enough to repost something if you still have it for sale or are looking to buy an item. I also like the idea of a seperate "Other stuff for sale" section as we all have alot of other items another member could use.

I'll play Devil's advocate. I don't know how much researching of a price goes on. I think most people would just ask how much something is worth. If a post is 2 years old, the prices might not be relevant anymore.

I'm glad for all this input. It shows the members care about this forum and it makes us admins feel better about decisions. I don't know about you guys, but I hate it when things are just done without warning.

So, it seems like there is great interest in a other stuff classifieds board.

Getting rid of old posts seems a good way to force all of us to re-post if an item is still for sale, thus keeping things current. Could you save the historical pricing data by moving old posts into an archive? Maybe hold them there longer?
