To a degree, I used the measurements offered in the service manual.  This frame took some abuse.  Up at the front, the two long rails were pitched like this…  \----\    (standing at the front looking toward the rear)

The long rails were also bent about 1” toward the passenger side.

Per the measurements in the manual, the rear of the frame was still in original undamaged condition, so I was able to use it to fix the front.

I used everything my shop could offer.  String lines, levels, plumb bobs, bar clamps, crow bars, Kubota tractor, framing square, breaker bars…you name it…it was probably involved. 
I also have a Willys with an undamaged frame.  This was helpful when checking measurements.

That said, I’m sure your 3A Page brethren (including me) would be able to help you with “on the fly” measurements if and when you might need them.

We all know that life and other projects can get in the way of our Willys work.  I should have been done with this 3A last year.  The weather has improved enough to get back out in the shop.  My tub has been hanging from the rafters now for a while.  Time to bring it down…







I organized and shifted the garage contents enough to make space for the final touches needed on the tub.  The chassis has been pushed to the corner…



The tub needs some minor welding, grinding and cleaning on the underside. The top needs a little more work too…







I did a mini modification project on this tub.  Many of you have the same modification.  Some of you wish you had it.  And the folks that have the M38s…well…it’s not a modification at all.  If you ever need to drop the transfer case with the tub in place, you need to remove the shift levers first.  It’s easier to do with an access hole.  The previous owner hacked open the side of the transmission tunnel already, so I decided to clean up the hole and make a cover plate for it.

 


I did a little extra by installing some spare cage nuts that were removed from an old scrap tub.  Turned out pretty slick…









Overall a pretty fun mini project.

Great idea and flawless execution, as usual. What did you use to cut that cover plate with? I still struggle cutting a straight line with anything, let alone something as intricate as that plate.

And I like the bucket on the shelf labeled "JEEPS". I've actually turned that corner in my garage where I only label stuff that isn't Jeep related. It's just a given now that everything else is.

Some people would say spring is in the air and get enthused about working on their projects, I say thank goodness for the Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars for getting me into the garage . I just tell Lynette that I'll be working in the man cave and she gives me the thumbs up.
