I'll check my '49. It looks to have an original high crown style bolt holding it on. I know my '53 has nothing there.

Are we talking about the Z shaped bracket on the top of the bellhousing? That is for the starter return spring. By 1953 the CJ-3A used a different starter and bellhousing so there is no bracket. A 1949 should have the bracket but it will be L shaped.

Yep, what Bob said! That's why my 53 did have it. I originally thought it might have been for a clamp for the parking cable or something.

Excellent! Thanks for that info. This does have the original kick start starter but the foot operated plunger was not all there..I'll need to find a replacement one. Would the plunger/spring/floor bracket from an early pickup work? I've seen them on ebay...

Would this be correct for a 51 3A?

I have the plunger, so wood for the block and the spring should be easy enough to find locally.

The spring is not correct. There were also 2 different versions of the push rod pedal although they are semi-interchangeable.

Is it the wrong spring or should there just not be a spring, as there already is a return spring on the starter?

Correct, there is only one spring and it goes between the clip on the bellhousing and the pedal where it connects to the starter arm.

Thanks Bob,

So with the return spring to the bell housing and a small block of hardwood I'll be in business....

Thank you again...

Whenever I can I like to make or replace parts so that the jeep will be as original as possible..even those parts that will be seldom or maybe never seen until the next time it's rebuilt...

Bob, do you have a photo of the return spring from the starter to the bellhousing?
