Front Brake Upgrade

I'm starting to put things back together, and I was thinking about doing a brake upgrade on the front axles to 11" drums with self adjusters over the original 9" drums.

What is the best (and hopefully cheapest) way to do this? I found a kit at http://www.the-jeep-guy.com/brakes.htm, but I'm not sure if that's the best way to go. I'd also like to keep the stock wheel size, so I obviously don't want to get anything so large that I'd have to change the wheels.

Has anyone done this?

I can't advise you on what parts to use but I will tell you that you will also need to do the rears at the same time. Mismatched brakes are a recipe for disaster, especially on a tall, short wheelbase, narrow track vehicle.

I purchased and installed the 11" up-grade kit about 15 years ago, and glad I did.  I did have to get new wheels (I used white spokes), but later learned that a little hammer work on the wheels would make them fit the 11" drums. My mistake was selling the original old wheels to a guy who made a trailer, and used them on it.  Jim

Is it only a requirement to have the same sized brakes because of how short the wheel base is? I haven't dealt much with brakes in anything older than a late 80s GM compact, but even that car had a larger (albeit disc) brake than the in the rear. Would the fact that it's a disc make it so that size between the two is less of an issue?

Jamesr, did you do both the front and the rear? I had heard the same about the 11" and the original wheels being, at best, a tight fit.

I can't seem to recall where I saw it, but I thought I had seen somewhere that there were a series of "heavy duty" upgrade options for the 3A, from a larger clutch, more leafs in the springs, and I thought somewhere I had seen something about larger or "mountain" brakes. Was there such a thing? I'd like greater stopping power, but if doing a modification like this is going to be a huge ordeal, I don't know if it will be worth it...

No, I never said that. What I said was that a short wheelbase magnifies the problem created with mismatched brakes.

Modern disc brakes are an entirely different horse; dual master cylinders and line pressure compensators for starters. The shoes on drum brakes are retracted away from the surface of the drum when not being used. That's not the case with disc brakes. On disc brakes the pads are not retracted and are always in contact with the rotor but no pressure is being applied. That's why you'll replace three sets of front disc pads before you ever need to even look at the rear shoes. When you apply pressure to the brake pedal, compensators regulate how the two different systems are applied, so you can see they are entirely different from the Bendix system used on these jeeps.

Keep this in mind as well, the brakes on these jeeps are not self-actuating, meaning the rotation of the drum does not increase braking by applying more pressure on the shoes. Most 11" brakes are self-actuating so it's not just the size difference that makes them more efficient. With 11" self-actuating brakes on the front and 9" Bendix type on the rear you are always at risk of the fronts locking up. That's OK if you're doing 30 mph on dry pavement, in a straight line but, on wet pavement? in a curve? on stones? There's a reason these flatfenders are prone to rollovers; high CG, short wheelbase, narrow track. Mis-matched brakes increase the risk.

Yes, I did all 4 wheels, and a new master cylinder. I later reinstalled the front brake line brush guards by grinding the back of the guard down, and slipping a piece of split hose over the grounded edge, caulking it in place.  I did that because the 11 in. brakes do not use the spiriled tube - they use fbrake line hose.  I ripped the front left brake line off on my first trip in the brush so I folded it back on itself and crimped it so it would not leak. I ran with 3 brakes for all those years.  But I trailered, and most of my 4 wheeling was done while hunting, and seldom saw decent roads or traffic. Alway brush. Last year, (15 years later) I reinstalled the altered brush guards when I did my frame off, and replaced all the braided hoses. Now I have 4 brakes again, and they stop me in a straight line on hard pavement in 3-high. And that takes time adjusting! And yes, I would do it again.  Jim

Thanks for the reply.

Did you use a kit to do the upgrade, or a junkyard swap? Did you use a dual reservoir master cylinder when you did your swap? The 11" drums and a dual master were really the only major changes I was going to make to the Jeep.

No, I installed a new single res. master cylinder when I did my restoration.  I did drill the lid, and installed another hydralic reservor on the firewall (as in the "Vern" upgrade).  I got tired of fighting the lid between the pedals.  I considered the dual res. but passed on it for now.  I thought that at some point in time, I would go the front disk brake kit route, and then install the dual res. I went the "kit" route, long ago, and it seems the parts are from a Jeep station wagon if I recall.  It was all new stuff, including new drums, shoes and wheel cylinders.  Jim

Thanks Jim. I think when it comes time to put the brakes back on to the axles I'll give the normal suppliers a call and see what they have. If I can't find what I'm looking for, I'll try the site I linked to in the first post. Should be able to find something I would guess...

Kurtis, I think Walks sells a kit, but not sure.  I'm not a die in the wool, keep it stock guy.  I like the look of the flatties, but I have done some modifications that fit me.  I nstalled bucket seats out of a Lincoln, because my a-- is to damned boney for my original seats (which are on the shelf in the shop) for anfy length of time or 4 wheeling.  Also seat belts to keep the bony a-- in, and 12 V system for ease of accessories. A roll (sport) cage, in case the bony a-- gets upside down (did that once in my CJ7).  Novac supplied all the parts from the flywheel to the driveshafts, because I only wanted to do it once, and Calvin learned the hard way.  Seeing how he is a friend of mine, I thought it respectable to learn from him! Also electric windshield wipers, although the arms and blades are kept in a piece of PVC pipe in the underseat storage box.  No sense letting the sun take them out in SE AZ. I'll put em on if I need them. Wench is next purchase.  I have a tendency to go where I had not ought to go when I'm alone.  I've used the handy man but I'm to old for that now. Also blinkers and flashers because none of the folks down here know hand signals anymore.  A left turn can cause a fight if they think you just flipped them off, and Im to old for that. Other stuff too, but it still looks like a 53 CJ3A. Jim

I think I'm going for something similar, not completely stock, but at least "stock looking" for the untrained eye. I'm not planning on doing any serious 4 wheeling, but just driving around town before I started the tear down I noticed that it took an awful lot of effort and distance to stop. Even at 40 MPH, the distance required is just too much when people are all to eager to jump in front of you only to slam on their brakes to make the next turn. Pretty sure I scared the s*** out of a few people when they realized the old Jeep isn't able to stop on a dime Smiley Same goes for seat belts, sure it's not original, but having a little extra safety and not being thrown out in the middle of a turn or when hitting a good hole in the trail or road sure makes up for whatever it loses in originality.

I'm with you MRMAN, I refer to mine as an 80% restoration, most of it is stock, but there are some features like shoulder harnes and roll bar the are fully reversable if someone wants to take it back to stock, but they sure add a little sense of comfort and security when driving down the city street.

Why did you decide on 11 inch brakes instead of 10 inch?  I'm thinking of a brake upgrade as well, I was under the impression that you could put 10 inch brakes with DJ wheel cyliners on the front of the 3A with minimal changes, new backing plate, new drums and shoes, and self adjusters, without too much trouble.  The next step would be to take the original wheel cylinders from the front, move them to the back as they are bigger than the original rears, thus giving about a 25% increase in braking power. Thoughts?

The 11" size came up as I was searching for kits. I wouldn't mind either, but after talking to at least one potential place to get them, the 11" drums he sells still fit under the stock wheels, so I figured why not go with 11?

One of the reasons I'm not looking for just half measures like getting larger slave cylinders, is that these original brake sets are missing some of the more "modern" comforts, at least as far as drum brakes go. Things like self adjustors sure help me sleep better at night Smiley

Hey mrman, while removing my 9" drums and backing plates this weekend I was also thinking about the upgrade to 11" drums. The original equipment on my CJ is in pretty bad shape and I can see where the upgrade would give you a much better performance. I don't want to change the rims since I have the original ones so I hope that there will not be any interference issues with the drums. I'm looking forward to hearing of your progress and reports.

Thanks George. I'll be sure and keep everyone updated. So far those that I've talked to don't seem to think there will be a problem with the 16" wheels and the 11" drums, so I'm just going to have to trust em on it until I get them in.
