Hello from Brazil...
« on: December 12, 2017, 01:27:21 PM »
Hello Guys,

I am from Brazil and just got this 1951 3A. It was imported from US to Brazil by Brazilian Army and stayed on duty until 1965. I dont know yet the full story but i am doing my research and when i have all info i post it here.

It is a military vehicle but it is not a M38. There are only minor changes like lights and painting as you can see on the photos.

If any one of you has more info about these Jeeps imported from US by Brazilian Army please tell me the story. As i told you i am trying to create a timeline for this unit.

I am also trying to understand if the Brazilian Army made all these changes on this 3A or it came from Willys like this. Can anyone help me with this?

Unfortunately we dont have much info from Brazilian Army. It seems they dont like to help!!! >:(

Anyway tks in advance to everyone.

Brgds,
Leo

Welcome!

This is an interesting 3A.  Can you post a photo of the inside face of the tailgate?  Also, a picture of the engine area?

Hi Leonardo,

I wanted to see the inside face of the tailgate to see if it is reinforced like an M-38.  It has Willys script, so it would be unusual to have both the 3A"Willys" and the M-38 reinforcement.

The fenders are from a Willys MB.  I don't think Willys was still making MB fenders by 1951, so these may be replacements done by the Brazilian Army.

The Grille is M-38.  This might have come from Willys this way.  I can't say.

I don't recognize the carburetor.  The PCV valve is disconnected/pinched off.  This is usually connected to the valve cover.

It really is mostly a 3A with some M38 bolt-ons.  Perhaps Bob W will give us all a little more insight on this one.

Tks athawk11 for your comments.

As i told you i have to unscrew the backseat to have a good picture of inside tailgate. As soon as i have the chance i will do it and post it here.

The carburetor on the foto came from a 1300 VW. I am still looking for a Carter WO to replace it. If you know anyone on the market please let me know.

Brgds,
Leo

Willys made all kinds of special order CJ-3As for other countries and special use. It is difficult to find documentation for all these special orders. One of the best sources would be to compare it to other Brazilian Army Jeeps. I suspect someone took a few liberties on this restoration.

If so it would be the same as a CJ-V35 tailgate. I will bet an M-38 tailgate (without Willys) cost more than a CJ-V35 tailgate (with Willys). Every deviation from a standard CJ-3A component cost extra.
