Hi from AZ
« on: July 23, 2017, 04:04:14 PM »
Hello all, new guy here and just now climbing onboard...

I purchased this '49 3A a couple years ago... it was the pride and joy of a Jeep enthusiast who had a really tough time letting-it go to a new home.

As you can (hopefully) see from the pictures, this 3A is in really pretty good condition compared to some.... rust is not much of an issue, but it does have it's share of dents, dings, cracks, leaks, looseness and other oddities that you might typically expect from a Jeep its age.  It's not much to look at, but could serve my wife and I just fine if left as-is cosmetically; not mechanically though, of course.

My intention is to restore-it back to near original form.

This is my 3rd Jeep over the years and certainly my oldest.   Previous Jeeps were CJ-5 and CJ-7, so not much vintage comparison there but I do own a 40s PW ya gotta love the flatheads.

Im sure to have questions if I cannot find the topic already laid-down in prior discussion-threads or established tech areas.

Great, informative site here  Thanks for sharing!

Welcome aboard!  It does look to be in pretty good shape and mostly original so you have a good starting point.  Does it run pretty good?

Thanks for the welcome.  It was likely running on only two cylinders when I bought it...  cracked intake and exhaust manifolds caused it to run loud, ugly and weak; in pretty much that order lol!   I fixed those and other issues then drove-it for a while to size-up other other things.

I've since pulled the head and found that two cylinders are sleeved and a couple small cracks exist in the block.  So, I have  some challenges there.  I picked-up a replacement engine recently for pretty low cost, so we'll see how that goes... it may provide some options.

Thanks Tim I appreciate it.    Yes, it is a good base to start with for sure.  I hope to improve on it over time and get it into better shape than I found it.  The enormous rear view mirror has to go :o

Hi Rick, thanks.  We're here in the valley, so N. Phx area.  Smart move on your part, it's great up there... I especially like the upper Panhandle.

Catching-up... thanks for the welcome Kirk;

after some work, should have it on the trails by end of Sept.  Engine work, crosstube, clutch plate & throw-out bearing, worn-out gauges, accelerator linkage issues... and on and on....
