My name is Bob. In 1961 my father a radiologist in Columbus received a 1951 CJ3A as partial payment in kind for a contract with Kaiser-Jeep Auto Workers. Having served in a Mash unit in WWII he always wanted a WWII style Jeep and so he worked out the deal.

Somewhere Kaiser Jeep found a new in crate campus red 51 CJ3A and my father picked it up in Toledo and we have had the Jeep ever since at our cottage in Northern Michigan. So many memories including learning how to drive when I was 10 with my Dad ,driving in top fender height snow at Christmas,and seeing how many people we could fit in for an ice cream run..that would be 8.

Anyway last weekend I brought it home to St Louis to get it running again after being parked for 10 years and getting it restored. It was painted once in the mid 70s after it started chalking and the engine was rebuilt about the same time. Other than that 39,000 miles and typical maintenance stuff. Look forward to being part of this special group. Thanks to Bob Westerman for offering some start up insights.

One request if anyone knows a good CJ3a shop here in St Louis I'd be greatful! Finally yes I am a life long Jeeper... 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer..1996 Orvis Grand Cherokee..2006 Overland Grand Cherokee..2011 Limited Grand Cherokee

Great story, Bob.  

Welcome to the 3A page.  That is a very nice looking Willys.  You know what's really great about your Jeep?  Well, lots of things, but knowing its history from day one....how cool is that?  I can only wish for that knowledge.

Welcome to the forum  You may need to talk to some antique car guys to find the person you want.  Go to some car shows and talk to the guys with flat heads for an engine.  They will most likly know where you can go.

Neat story, make sure you keep any documentation of the history in a safe place as it adds value to the jeep. As far as a good jeep shop in the STL area, I think the jeep is parked in front of one. The best restorations are often doen at home. You can always hire out parts of the job that you can't do, but a whole lot of the cost of jeep redos is just flat out manual labot in disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly.

Very, very cool.
I love the stories of old Jeeps (and other stuff) that have been handed down through a family.
What a great example.
Looks like you've got a really nice one to work on.
Keep us posted on your progress. We love pictures and stories.

Hey thanks all for the warm welcome. I will do my best to use search to find answers for my questions,read the faqs...but I am sure to be a question pest. So I apologize in advance.

One quick question..can I upload more than I picture per post? Some uploads have multiple attachment boxs. I noticed when I uploaded the Jeep picture I could not see the picture in the preview post but saw it when I posted message. Thanks again!

Hi Bob,

The best way to post multiple photos in one post is to use a photo site like  www.Photobucket.com  It is free.  You have to sign up.  Once you have an account, you can upload your photos to the Photobucket site.

Once they are there, you can easily copy your photo, then drop as many photos as you like, right into your post here at the 3A.  It is an extra step, but well worth it.

There are some posts about the process in the 'Website Feedback' section.  They may help you.  If you find the process a bit confusing, I, or others here would be happy to help with some step by step instructions.

We are highly motivated to help you post lots of photos.   8-)

Welcome to the forum!  I'm down in the bootheal of Missouri and glad to see someone else close by.  I don't know if you knew it or not, but there was a Willys reunion and swap meet in Jeff City last month (check the car show section of the forum) that is a great place for parts and advice.

Again, welcome and you have a great story with that 3A!

Man, I have NO idea.
All the old Jeep folks I know do their own repairs.
Same with me.

My 3A is nowhere near as nice as yours but it will be someday. � :)
