Hello from Idaho
« on: November 12, 2015, 05:23:23 PM »
Hey there!

I'm Alex. I bought a '51 3A a couple weeks ago as a project for my two teenaged sons and I to work on together.

The jeep: currently has an F head in it. I'm looking for an L head to put in its place. I'll post a thread in the for sale and/or wanted forum that. The frame appears to be straight and without any visible cancer or cracks. The body is in ok shape, as far as I can tell. Because of the F head, the hood has a big ugly hole in it. Looks like the hood needs to be replaced anyway. Our plan is to do a frame off resto-mod on it. I wanna get it running first to verify all that works and doesn't work. Plan to powder coat the frame, rebuild an L head (once I find one) rebuild tranny, new springs with small lift (~2"), all new wiring, complete body work, and proper interior job. Oh, and new tires and wheels. All along the way, I'm hoping my sons can learn the value of hard work and gain some automotive mechanical insight.

About me: Single dad to three awesome kids. Love Idaho and all that it has to offer. Huge Huskers fan. Go Big Red! My friend and I both has Willys wagons in high school... we both wish we still had em.

Thanks for looking. Any help or tips would always be very welcome.

Welcome Aboard!

Lots of knowledge here and between all of us just about every part of the Willy's has been built, rebuilt or modified in some way..start a build thread and we will all follow along!

There are mods that might allow you to keep the f-head if it's a good runner.. A Holley (1909?) from an early 60's Falcon with the straight six is supposed to work and fit under the hood..and there is a side draft carter that works but requires some sort of 90 adapter..

Welcome.  It looks like your starting off with a good candidate.  Great that Dads teach the boys how to wrench.  They will remember that Jeep fondly.  I still remember riding in Grandpa's jeep when I was 5.  I own it now and will pass it to my son one day.

Welcome Sharptail!

Hey Rick,  do you think Sharptail's rig looks a lot like Lee's 2A?  Paint the wheels yellow and it's a dead ringer! ;D

Don't know no Lee  ;) But, I was recently in Arvada. I liked it. Went hiking by Idaho Springs and ate at Beau Joes, yummy pizza. Had I known, I would have liked to meet you and see your Jeep. I do love all things Willys!

Welcome Alex! Willys sure looks a lot better than mine when I got it... Good luck in your project. I got mine to work on it with my son. Great way to bond...
