Good evening all!

My name is Peter and I live in Western Maine.  I have dreamed of owning an old jeep for years.  I recently came across a deal I could not resist and much to my wife's displeasure I am a proud owner of a rusty clump of happiness :D! I look forward to working on it with my 2 1/2 year old son.  He and I "tinker" on his toys with wrenches he drags out of my tool box.  Anyway... I bought what I thought was a 1948-49 heap/jeep sight unseen.  I recently picked it up and was able to locate the vin plate.  It looks to be a 1952. I will not be starting this project until I complete my current frame up restoration of a 1976 KZ400.  My goal is to begin the jeep rebuild in May or June.  Before I start I have one looming question, how much rust is too much?  I run a pretty well equipped shop and we have a 10x10 sandblasting booth where I plan to sand blast the frame as a first step.  Are there minimum metal thicknesses that I should be looking for?    Thanks for your help in advance!

Welcome Peter from another Mainer, I am just down the road in Portland. Looking forward to pic's of your "rust bucket". Can there be too much rust? Read these pages and you will  be amazed at the skills your 3A brothers have. I once laughed at a post that said "I found a grill and made the rest".

If you want a good example of how rusty things can be and still be salvageable, check out this thread.

I'm pretty sure there's another thread with a perhaps even more rusty tub. I can't remember whose. About all he could save was the top edges of the tub. Maybe one of the other guys can remember who it was.

It all depends on your skill level, time, energy and most of all, inclination. If you want to do it, you can figure out how.

Hi Peter,
Welcome aboard.� 3A frames are pretty tough.� I haven't seen one that would be 'too rusty to save'.

The tub is another conversation all together, but as others have stated, anything is possible depending on your skill set, available time, and desire to torture yourself. ;)

Post a few photos when you get some time.

Thank for the warm welcome!  I will provide pics shortly.  They reside on my computer at work.  I tend to review them and daydream.... Help the day go by!  It is great to see a few Mainers kicking around.
