soft top door frames
« on: March 08, 2025, 05:04:23 PM »
Got my 54 CJ-3B back from body shop. 95 percent put back together. Getting ready to fire up the engine shortly.  I want to put an original soft top on it.  BW canvas wants close to $6000 for a full winter enclosure.  NL canvas price is much better, but they require door frames.  I've tried a couple of salvage yards, no luck.  BW canvas will sell me the frames for $600 plus $500 shipping; I cannot afford that.  I could use some help finding a pair or if you have a frame can you send me the dimensions?  I have access to a torch and welder.

Be sure to post in the wanted section of this site. The more people who see it will increase your chances of finding them.  Check with Jeep parts vendors they often have used parts not listed on their sites.

Have a torch and welder, you say?

Have you read any of jpet's posts on the 2A Forum?  He has fabricated a lot of stuff and shares the drawings/dimensions on his threads.  Example:

https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/make-your-own-canvas-top_topic10355_post154997.html?KW=door+frame+dimensions#154997

Scroll down where he posts links to his drawings.  Concentrate on the "Doors" section - specifically #2.  That will help.  There are more posts but trying to simplify.  Keep in mind the door frames for the 3B/3A will have minor differences.  I personally only have a set of early BesTop door frames - so what a frame looks like and how it fits against the tub is skewed.

More:
https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/door-frames-for-canvas-top_topic10539_post85304.html?KW=door+frame+dimensions#85304

However, using the images on 3A and 3B Pages you'll be able to identify and incorporate the correct differences.

Maybe a mock-up of thin wire before going through your stash of rods.

Steve,
You should visit the 2A thread where Subodh has been collaborating with the members on tweaking and fine tuning the fit.  Lots of progress happening!

Rus, I just made an observation, not interested in a top, but I read the link, mostly in the beginning 10 pages then skipped to the end.  21 pages of "critical thinking" expressed with various "individual requirements/desires".  At least the vendor hung in there, took the punches, and made an effort for "improvements".  WHY don't we see the same effort from US vendors becomes a question unanswered???  I recently have 3/3 eBay seller experiences where "something was lost in the translation" around "specs" and/or "fitment information".  Conversion from inches to mm, and visa-versa, do not seem to "match calculator-conversions".  China was involved with each product from a US DISTRIBUTOR.  Intentional "chaos"???  "Labor costs" and "shipping", and now "tariffs", and it is going to get very "challenging" to "buy anything" without "brick and mortar, hands-on buying" capabilities.  Even "site information" has become a "divide" within the world of the internet.  "Caviot emptor" comes to mind... among other "concerns"...  Good Luck to ALL, for Happy Willys experiences...
