Mystery holes in tub
« on: February 02, 2024, 10:32:58 PM »
My 1964 CJ3B has some mystery holes. There are two 1/4" holes in the driver's side of the tub, and two more holes in the exact same position on the passengers side. There was nothing in the holes when I got the jeep. Since this Jeep had a top, is it possible that there may have been some rubber bumpers in these holes to protect the paint from being scratched by the door frames? At any rate, that's probably what I will use them for.

That sounds like as good a guess as any. Nice looking Jeep.

Having a matching set on the other side does suggest it was intentional.  The door fabric (vinyl/canvas) should wrap around the frame and provide "some" protection but it isn't unusual to find previous owners adding their own preferences.  I could imagine, unless relatively thin, any added bumpers would also act as spacers to take away more of the minimal seal from the frame/fabric being held against the tub.  Have you studied images of any of the other "modern" models from the '60's to see if any of them have similar holes?

Yes, I have combed through the owner photos on the CJ3B page and haven't found anything.
With the doors on, the holes are covered, but I haven't looked to see if the metal door frames and the holes line up.
