oil filter change ... old oil still in filter housing ?

so i'm changing my oil in my 62 3b, and i go to swap filters, and there is a 1/2 quart of oil in the filter housing after the old filter was taken out. is that normal ? shouldn't it drain in to the oil pan ? i did some googling but didn't find the answer . i used a turkey baster and removed the old oil. seems odd that it didn't drain down.... first time willys owner, and first time doing maintenance

Yes, normal.
The oil return back to the crankcase is through the center tube and out the bottom of the canister.
There's a small hole in the side of that tube an inch or two from the top that oil goes through after being filtered.
That's why there's always the remains of used oil to drain, dipper, or suck out of the canister.

Recommend inspecting to make sure that small hole is clear when you change filters.

thanks, i cranked it with out fuel to build oil psi, and get oil to the filter. then got it running, in a bit i will re check the oil, and top it off. i'm sure it's a tad low due to what is now in the filter housing.
