DJ5 Information

This is information I have scratched around and found on the internet.  This is about the Toledo built DJ5 and not about the South Bend built DJ5x Dispatcher 100 (aka Postal Jeep).

It sure looks like 4WD front hubs and differential showing.

To which photo are you referring?

I only saw two pics on the link.  The topless one shows both 'control hubs' and what appears to be a differential hanging down on passenger side.  The hardtop pic also seems to show 'switchable hubs' and a "tube axle" not an I-beam.  However, since my previous post my large monitor died, and I can't zoom in as well on this smaller one.  Does anybody else see something different?

The shadows were playing games with my eyes on the initial images.  I clicked on the links to view additional images.

This looks like the same grill with most of the jeep disassembled (noting the M38 headlight guards are missing) I may be wrong.  It shows a better angle under the front:

I don't have any documentation on the DJ jeeps so I can't really comment on the claims made by the author.

I'm pretty sure DJ3As had 4 lugs thru 1962, while DJ5As/Postals came with 5 lugs.  Perhaps the spec sheet explains the "tube axle".  I haven't collected any DJ5A data as I only have the DJ3A, but I remember seeing early postals with the I-Beam and 5 lugs.  Those did not have the large hub as in the 2 pictures that I referenced.  One thing about DJs I've learned... "never say they never did that".  DJs were formed using "leftovers from the beginning".  Different plants may have had different "leftovers" to work with until they ran out of them.

Attached are two pics of my '62 DJ3A DISPATCHER (decal still legible) first showing both hubs, and second close up of front I-Beam axle hub and 4 lugs.   As you can see, the hub size is completely diffferent from the DJ5s pictured.

There are four links to read on the top right of the page when using the PC.  Keep in mind that the Dispatcher 100 was produced in South Bend and the DJ5 was produced in Toledo. 

If you are viewing on a mobile phone I think there is a menu selection in the top left for the four articles.

Both of the 1970 DJ5s on the first page are two wheel drive and are the later tube axle design which began with the five lug wheels (67 or so).  The I beam that was used on the DJ3A along with the four lug wheels were carried over on the DJ5 from 65-67.

The DJ-5 in its many variations is a complicated subject, but I can vouch for Mark as somebody who has been researching them for a while and probably knows more about them than anybody I know. He has been the source for much of the limited amount of information about them that I have been able to post on CJ3B.info.  It's good to see that he has brought a lot of his research together on his new website at https://jeepdj5.blogspot.com/

Note that at the top of his home page there are several links to pages with many more photos.  I have not had a chance to look closely at them yet.
