CJ-3B grill guard/screen
« on: January 26, 2023, 03:31:27 PM »
I am looking for a grill guard/screen for a 3B. I have found reference to a part No. 633550 that is no longer available. If anyone has one, I’d be interested. Or, if anyone has the measurements of an original they could share, I think 8 could fab one. Thx.

Had to log out, copy/paste to see text.

Capt,
That part number you posted took a bit to find.  I found it on the CJ2A Parts Database and a thread showing images (note: images don't show - right click on each image "square" and open in new tab to see):

https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/663550-kit-chaff-screen-and-brush-guard_topic2628.html

Parts List:

https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/parts-list-database_topic6798.html

And it is a kit that seems to include everything:

663550    Kit, Chaff Screen, Brush Guard and Lower Deflector.........1

Since that references an older Chaff Screen, it may be a bit misleading during your search.  If you're after just the lower Deflector:

663541     DEFLECTOR, radiator brush guard, assembly.........1

Another thread on that deflector:
https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/shield-under-the-grill-photos_topic18216.html

It may help in breaking that out of the 2A Parts list (I haven't found a listing for just this).  With measurements, I think one could be made.

One thing I'll mention is that lower deflector isn't listed in my the 3B Parts Manual.  Also, the two different Chaff Screens aren't really interchangeable.  The older "low hood" screens will fit on a 3B (just not well) but I don't believe the 3B screen would fit on the older jeeps due to (possibly) height and headlight interference.

Rus, thanks so much for the great info, and helpful pics. Very much appreciated!

If there was a readily available 3B guard available, I’d just buy one…. But, that’s a no-go.

I agree, the low hood guard does not look ‘right.’ But I’m liking the simple rectangular version. I need to pick out an expanded metal or rigid mesh material, and then figure out some kind of edging material, maybe flex window channel, or weatherstrip? Anyway, a good fab project.

Thanks again for your help,

Joe

Here’s a pic of my 1964 with an original nos chaff screen.
I no longer own that Jeep and that’s the only 3b chaff screen I have ever seen.

Joe,
Between the two styles, I'd think the simple 3B design would be much easier to make.  At one time, I'd actually thought about seeing what it would take to make one and was taking close-up shots of different chaff screens at the Reunions over the years.  Then out of nowhere, a member posted a couple way back before Tapatalk.  I have one now.

During the search for those images above I came across an article for John Ittel's '53.

https://cj3b.info/Owners/Ittel53.html

Click on that first image (or the embedded link in the text) for a larger image showing the front of his jeep and you'll see what looks like a home-made screen.  The text even describes how it was made! Very well done.

Ours is in:

GROUP 35-12 CHAFF SCREEN AND BRUSH GUARD
682841     Screen, chaff, radiator guard, assembly.........1

Thanks once more. John Itell’s screen looks great, and I will take a shot at one. Hardware cloth is easy, I even have some on hand and I have partial cans of spray PlastiDip and truck bed coating for the channel, so just need to find some channel. I’m thinking it’s doable.

One of the things to love about old CJs, flat panels, simple, common hardware fasteners.  [:-)

Thanks again.
