MB/GPW spring pivot bolts fit CJ?
« on: April 24, 2022, 01:08:06 AM »
Well.... there's something you don't want to see...I haven't even finished the whole suspension swap, let alone hit the road in this yet, and the spring eye pivot bolt head popped off sometime in the last week when the jeep was just sitting.  I'm more than concerned about this,  obviously, and am now looking for NOS bolts all around. I located some,  but website says they're for GPW/MB. I assume they're the same dimensions?  But want to check with the experts.

That's not good at all. If not a little worrying. Do you know who supplied them or did they come with the Jeep?

Came from a seller in PA in a kit that was "made in USA". I generally have a higher respect for this retailer,  but this has me a little shook up.  This bolt is new,  but what's scary is it failed at some point when I wasn't even around...I just noticed it while checking something else out. So sometime between the 17th and today...

Hmmmn. Strange. Possibly it got over hardened.
They need not be torqued down tight.
That’s why they are castellated.
Peter Debella ?
Any of the Jeep pivot bolts will fit but you may see subtle differences in the head shape or it’s thickness.

Walcks :/ whom I've been generally happy with.  But this is pretty concerning. The break seems to suggest a metallurgical issue...I've located a set of NOS bolts for the GPW/MB, just have to watch out for that torque reaction one,  sounds like.

I did a copy/paste so I could see Ken's post.

To add, did you follow the "S-5. Install Spring," directions and back off the nut for the cotter pin?

Issues with parts can happen.  Vendors should be able to swap out defective parts.

To directly address your question, I had to access a manual for the military jeeps (hint: g503.com) and the springs are the same dimensions.  I don't see a pivot bushing dimension in our SM that would help identify the bolt size, but leave it to the military to provide it:

From TM-10-1513, pg 1600-124.  Front Eye Bushed....1 3/4" long I.D., .5655"

If our bushing matches this, then I'd be comfortable saying the GPW/MB pivot bolt would match.

Yup, install was performed exactly this way.

I'll go mic the bushing and one of the bolts now...

Mic'd everything I could think of. The depth measurement through the zerk isn't terribly scientific,  but the difference is obvious.
The measurements underneath are a little hard to read,  but the bracket are 2.28" Outside (roughly) and 1.77" Inside (roughly) was a little hard to hold mic and phone/camera

I tried to include all the info in each file name. The photos are rather large, so I apologize for wha will be a lot of uploads coming in replies...

zerk fitting depth comparisons.

Between the new (0.605") and the old (0.463") there's a difference of 0.142". My guess...is this is getting too close to where the head meets the shank....

brackets unmounted/mounted comparison (I'm sure at this point, the distances don't matter since the bolt is popped, we'll never no if it was over-tight?

I realize now (of course, since I'm not near the jeep) that I should've measured the depth of the head.

I forgot to ask if the set you have right now, will metric wrenches fit on the zerq or the bolt/nut?  (Yeah, I know, made in the USA, but....)

On the military set you're eyeballing, are you able to order just one?  If not, then if the total shipping is tolerable (and seller agrees to return) then ordering to test fit seems like an option to me.  From my limited perspective, the bushing and the length (through the bracket) are the only two critical measurements for fitment: Do they fit your springs and will they reach all the way through without being too long?

I think, based on what I see, those military bolts should work  -  I wouldn't know for sure until after install.

I'll check, but I'm pretty sure a metric wrench fits...(11mm if memory serves...)

If I had more time, I would agree that this would be the best route. They are expensive....If they are a perfect fit though, I will be happy with the money spent knowing they are safer.
Based on how hard they were to find, and my time frame, I might just order what I need, then sort it out later (sell online, probably). If nothing else, we'll have a data point here :D
As a backup, a gentleman named Sal Walter makes a lot of small parts with oilite and I may or may not have convinced him to speed up development of a bushing/bolt combo as a replacement. I'm trying to keep the jeep as close to current condition, so I'll do my best to keep stock parts, but if all else fails, I'll have to make a choice for safety above looks.

UPDATE: I called the supplier to let him know. He says the issue is with how far into the bolt the grease channel/zerk fitting was drilled. He's sending me a new set of 4 with the correct tolerances. They've removed all the old ones from their stock. I still don't trust the bolts that'll be coming, and I've already ordered the NOS GPW/MB set. So, we'll see what we get when they get here. I'll be sure to measure the tolerances of old/new/nos/replacements and post it all here for comparison.

Cheers!

Update 1/?

"NOS" pivot eye bolts from ArmyJeepParts.com

I purchased and received "NOS" Pivot Eye Bolts from ArmyJeepParts.com (after speaking to them over the phone and being assured these were indeed NOS). However....these look too clean to my eyes, and in measuring the depth of the bore for the grease fitting, I don't think they compare to what came off the jeep. That said, I don't have my micrometer near me, so the measurements in the images below were made with a ruler. It is worth mentioning that the cotter pin hole lines up better than the repops I'd seen originally and the groove cut in the outer shank appears to be an exact match to the ones I pulled from the jeep (the repops were just ground off flat). I unfortunately don't have the bolt that came off the jeep near me, but once I do and can measure properly, I'll update this post.

I whipped out my high school drafting skills to do a quick cross section. I'm sure Mr. Spinoza will be upset, but the visual was still worth the effort.
Small edit: the grease channel bore inside the shank is ~3/16", leaving the wall at ~3/16" as well.
